I don't know if any of you gals have your orders in, but yet another vintage styling book is to be released on May 1! I have no clue if this is new or a re-print, but I'd figured it would get some love from you gals.

I have it, and I have to say it's not great. I got mine really cheaply on Amazon, but wouldn't have bought it if I had been able to look inside beforehand. It's style over substance, and not really good explanations on how to do the styles. Also contains lots of pictures of modern celebs, and has strange hairstyle choices for the decades they chose.

To be perfectly honest -- I didn't think it looked very good, either. But it was in my amazon recommendations and I'm sure a few people on here would find it useful I'm actually put off by the hairdo they decided for the cover.

^Believe me, that is probably the best choice out of the book for the cover! I feel really mean to be so scathing and always want to support vintage entrepreneurs, but it was just so disappointing. Oh well, serves me right for not wanting to splash out on Lauren Rennell's book...

I have that book too. Honestly, I have to agree with Drapper! Its not that good, the explanations/instructions are poor and there are only a few hairstyles in it. Ive learned more off listfreemontstreet than this book.
I feel awful because my mother got me it for my birthday.

i had a suspicion that this would not be as good as Lauren's book. This just reaffirms my resolve to by Vintage Hairstyling soon.

I know people always recommend it, but how good is Lauren's book actually? I keep it in my Wishlist on Amazon, but the cover really puts me off for some reason, and I have never seen any other images from it. IS there much in it that isn't already on Youtube?

I admit to being all thumbs with my hair. I got a bunch of books from the library, and then bought Vintage Hairstyling... by far, the Rennells book has been the most helpful. It really starts with the basics - the science of a curl, how to form them, which curls to use to get what effects. I like the hairstyles, because I'm not at all creative, and they give me a place to start. If you're already adept at curling, brushing out, and styling, you may find it a bit sophomoric, but if you're a beginner or advanced beginner, I highly recommend it.

Lauren's book is good, but Lisa Freemont Street is better.

I love Lauren's book. Even though I have a pretty good handle on all the techniques, I love finding a hairstyle in there for inspiration. There are a lot of times when I just have an un-inspired day, or a set comes off goofy (most of the time, it didn't dry) and I can usually find something to adapt. If a friend came to me who had no knowledge whatsoever and wanted to start to do vintage hairstyles, I would order that book for her and send her to lisafreemontstreet's youtube channel!

Also, sometimes it's just more convenient to have a book that you can open up. But then, I am a bibliophile...
