Are Hemp and Milan the same? I see hats advertised at Hemp Milan.
NO............they have been advertising many a weird straw name lately..........Are Hemp and Milan the same? I see hats advertised at Hemp Milan.
correct me if I am wrong .. .I am no straw hat expert ... but I believe "Milan" is a type of weave and "Hemp" is a materialAre Hemp and Milan the same? I see hats advertised at Hemp Milan.
CORRECTOMUNDO!correct me if I am wrong .. .I am no straw hat expert ... but I believe "Milan" is a type of weave and "Hemp" is a material
a "Milan" can be woven from multiple materials ... Hemp being one of them
Can anyone put a name to this weave. The hat came out of the Philippines prior to 1945, but not sure if it originated there.
Great link. I had the pleasure of watching Art at VS with one of his legit Milan hats. There are still real ones out there.
I have a relatively modern Dobbs "Milan" that is made from what seems to be a plasticized paper product. I love the shape of the hat but it is a far cry from a good hat.True "Milan" as in the weave, is traditionally made with wheat straw.....now in differant circles "Milan" has often come to refer also to the particular straw from Italy, and not only the weave......and sometimes not the weave at all, but just the straw.

It looks to me to be a similar weave pattern to a Baku that Alan has posted. Not having a Baku myself, it's hard to be certain. Not sure about being a buntal, all the ones I have seen have a distinctive rectangular weave origin point pattern. Buntals do come from the Phillipines, though. Can anyone put a name to this weave. The hat came out of the Philippines prior to 1945, but not sure if it originated there.

I picked up mine today @BobHufford and it is a buntal weave per the pictures posted above by @alanfgag
