Excellent - thank you! This hat is earlier than the No.1s I've posted. It was sold from the same store as the Clear Nutria Quality posted recently.

I've added your original sweatband markings below.

For sweatband lot XXXXs we'll have to hunt down an executive who worked prior to 1940.

Looking back at the No.1s of Jeff and Buler, both from LOT7686 and with the newer (c.1940) single panel manufacturing tag, it seems that the transition from three panel to single panel tag happened around LOT76XX. My Standard Quality also shows a 76XX number and new tag, where this tiny No.1, LOT7527 has the last version of the three panel tag.

Now we just need a rosetta stone hat with a date marked in it somewhere...

Thank you for these additions Robert. Yes, stiff and soft - the 2 (sometimes 2 1/8, 2 1/4) corresponding to the sweat width, I think. Scalloped size tag and low LOT number as on the Stetson Star on page 1 of the thread.

I could learn to like that theory. Would seem unlikely that the big bang began in 1910... there were a lot of hats under the bridge at Stetson by then. And I have never seen a 5 digit LOT number. (I'm afraid you are going to come up with that one next.)

Don't remember this Stetson... it looks like an old one.
