This is the new Stetson "Nostalgia" and overall I'm very impressed. The feel of the felt is 'very' similar to that of my vintage Royal Stetson 'Whippet' (which I hasten to add, I adore!). Soft felt, but with enough (bite) tension to it to hold a decent shape (and in practical terms fend off a rain shower!)

This one is in the colour description of 'Caribou' which I would call 'gunmetal grey.' The unbound edge 'could' benefit from being bound, and a slightly narrower ribbon 'would' raise the crown, but I'm nit-picking here and we all have our little foibles when it comes to 'what' makes 'us' look good in a hat, rather than what makes a great hat ;) MK got it right (in my opinion) with the brown sweat and white liner (this one is black liner and black sweat with gold lettering - so from a practical point of view won't show any hair oil staining 'as much.'). The decoration of a few exotic feathers tucked behind the bow is a nice touch tipping a nod to the days when men carried swords and threw cloaks over puddles for the ladies ;)
ALL-IN-ALL, Stetson have got themselves a winner here coming in on a middle price bracket hat with the features of a more expensive one (and what a full range of colour options too!! can't be bad), and certainly bringing back to life some lovely vintage features that have been dying out lately with high street hatters.
(I was in Locks in Jermyn Street, London. last week and boy are some of the prestige hatters losing their focus - sad to say. So this little baby from Stetson is 'very' encouraging and sends a message to the likes of 'us' to contact the hatters and let them know just what 'you' would want them to be producing in the future).:eusa_clap

Great stuff Paddy. Top notch.

(2) re Locks in Jermyn Street, London, what are the offering these days?

I was looking at some of my hats and a few have a thin rim binding, but then it's dressed up with a little extra stitching though the brim just to the inside of the brim ribbon, one or two rows. I think that looks nice too.

Doesn't it looks fine on Paddy's noggin? I figured it would be good to get some input from across the pond on these hats.;)

I would definitely buy it. Without a doubt.

I think it would sell here, for sure. There are some stores here that carry modern Stetson, but I think this would go down a treat.

I think they should get it into London stores too.

It has been lashing rain here for weeks now and nobody thinks it's strange that you're wearing a hat when it is raining cats and dogs.... :p

I for one don't care how wide the brim binding is. I don't worry about such details. As long as there is binding, it's cool with me.

For me, it's wide binding or no binding. I do not like narrow binding.

For the most part, and in this case, I second that.
However, I do believe that for every possible style and configuration of hat, there is always one specimen that defies it's detractors!

Comparison photos of 3 different grey fedoras...

Just thought it would be of interest to compare three different grey fedoras with similar felt qualities, but all from different eras!!;)

This FIRST set of photos is of the new Stetson Nostalgia:

This beautiful Royal Stetson WHIPPET is not too disimilar to the new piece by Stetson. I just love this hat!!

The final set here is of a 1950's Henry the Hatter Beaver Felt. As you can see the brim is 'that' bit shorter than fedoras of the 30's and 40's. But very 'cool' non the less!! and the felt is beautiful to the touch.

Stetson does not currently make this hat with a bound brim. I am trying to find someone locally to bind the brim of the one I have in Caribou. Haven't heard back on the cost yet.

No ,not realy. Our good friend and very good customer Analogist now owns the first Nostalgia with the binding and slightly lower band . He came by today to pick it up. I hope he posts pics of it with a C crown that we steamed in for him. The bulk of the order is on it's way.
