As great recovery, Jared. That turned out to be a very splendid hat. The horsehair braid fits nicely on the wide brim.

This is a No. 1 Quality refurbishment by Bob at Black Sheep Hatworks. Original sweat was trashed. 6" open crown, 3.5" brim, about 3" after the curl. Haven't found a match in the Miller -Stockman catalogs for the model name. Very moldable felt with that great black tone that these old hats have. Bob mentioned he thinks is a mercury processed felt.

Couldn't find much on the store despite the University of North Texas having an online database of the Temple Daily Telegram. I did find several references to a McCelevey-Hartmann women's store, which I assume was the sister store to the men's shop. One of the two references pulled up to the men's store was this 1939 high school yearbook.

And here's the hat:

Bob saved the original ribbon

I asked for a red satin liner, and Bob picked out a darker shade of leather like the original.

I think I've settled on this crease, I also picked up a horse hair band at Golden Gate Western Wear.

Thanks, gents. I pulled this one out of the box and immediately got a huge grin on my face. This is darn near a grail hat for me. The grail hat would be a Fray sweatband Boss Raw Edge, but at this point it's really splitting hairs!

Great find Jared... and great that you were able to have Bob do the renovation. Wear it with joy.

Thanks Alan, definitely took some inspiration from similar hats of yours. Forgot to also credit Garrett who passed it on to me.

Love it Jared! Great crease and hat band addition.

Thanks Bob, happy to have this one.

SUPER hat. Those tiny threads look 30s to me, did you get to see any tags inside the hat?

This showed up online and I took a few screenshots for posterity. The owner said it was Stetson, but it’s don’t see any Stetson branding. Anyone familiar with this No. 1 label?

The new owner was complaining that the old felt wasn’t high quality like modern felt. He said he was thinking about having it stiffened! I casually mentioned that I make him a fair offer for the hat and that it would be a shame to stiffen it. No response yet.

Worth it for the liner alone.
