Stetson No. 1 Quality

This one almost ended up in the gripes section. I picked it up on an estate auction with only a few pics. I figured there was a decent chance it was a late 30s, early use of the “newer” No 1 Quality crest on the sweat.

The hat arrived and the first thing: plastic on the liner. Oh well. But the felt was really quite soft and moldable, much nicer than a typical 50s Stetson.

Well… open it up a little and there it is: a white refurb tag over a 20s/30s manufacturing tag and a pre-mid30s type orange tag.

A mid-brown hat, a big 4 inch brim:

Can anyone chime in with opinions regarding the quality of the felt on the '60s No. 1 Quality westerns? Or know when they stopped production of these models?

Thanks in advance !

I love the tall crown. After “hatting” for years now my biggest pet peeve is when a hat I get has a short crown. They look squatty to me now. I love a good tall crown. I think you get that way after being used to wearing hats but when everyone first starts they think even the short crowns are super tall and hate the look of a tall crown on their heads. I always tell people that if you think the crown is too tall, it’s not. You just have to get used to wearing the hats and you’ll end up wanting a taller crown.

A lot of truth in that. Also very much true with brims. Seems to be a recurring theme around the lounge as folks go further down the hat rabbit hole.

Hi y’all, I’m looking for some information on this No. 1 Quality hat I picked up at an estate sale. The liner is red satin. There is a union tag inside the leather sweat band but no other markings. The box had marker writing - 3 1/2 br. (Brim) XXX 7 1/4 Sand P. I initially thought it had been dented in the front and back, was going to reshape, but am realizing that this was the style. Anyone have any idea how old this is?

1970’s, the front & back dents with the lower crown height were called mule kicks, sometimes front only. Sand P was Sand Pebble, a Western color.
