Stetson No. 1 Quality

That's another thing about the, no.1's, the different configurations. Both of mine are stiff felt, straight up cowboy hats. Yours is soft. @Hurricane Jack got one not long ago that the crown appears to be very soft and it has a bound brim.

My No. 1 has a 3.5” bound brim and the crown is quite soft, almost as soft as a dress weight. Buying vintage hats sight unseen you never know just what you’re getting until it arrives.

Bama et al, this post and Jared’s tables got me thinking about NO.1s. (I heard that)!! Not being an expert, but having some, i can only speculate. Each one of mine is quite different. Each is from the same era yet different times. The only real commonality is the felt feel, differing only in stiffness. Liners, no liners, varying Logos, sweatband variances, brim widths/ finishes and particularly very different ribbon treatments all in the same hat.
Fedoras of the same model can vary, we all see this, however, No.1s seem to have been offered in just about “whatever you wanted” you can get it in a NO.1. The everyday man’s western.
So, i surmise that Stetson recognized the popularity and in response offered many more boxes to check when everyday Joe Western walked in a store and said “I wanna order a Stetson”.
Maybe that’s why it’s named “The NO.1”!
Just a thought or two.

No. 1 Quality is a felt grade.

It's not clear to me exactly where on the spectrum it fit, but I believe it was on the lower echelon of Stetsons. Check out this page from a reprinted Stetson catalogue that Justin posted a while back:

"The genuine Boss Raw Edge Kettle Finish hats are not made in less than Nutria quality at the prices herein given...We, however, make an imitation of these shapes in the No. 1x and No. 1 qualities."

This other page shows the increasing prices from No. 1 Quality to Real Beaver.

Is there is a date connected with this price card? The No.1 Quality mark goes way back (first decade of 20th century, perhaps earlier). At its price point, it must have produced a large percentage of western hat sales - many examples in many styles and dimensions survive today in the vintage market place. The high end Stetson beaver fur felt hats are very rarely seen. The older No.1 quality imprint (used up and down and later, side to side) resurfaced in a new design after WWII (although some early examples of the new mark seem to overlap on the timeline with the old one, c.1940). This new mark continued into the 1950s and maybe 1960s. A long life for a Stetson staple that changed with they times.

When Justin posted originally, he titled the thread "1900's Stetson Catalog." Maybe he knows for sure, but I didn't see a specific date in the scanned pages. It does seem to be from very early in the 20th century.
