So this hat arrived yesterday. I believe it's around the mid 60's mark but it is absolutely pristine and my first vintage hat. I'm blown away at how nice this hat is. The felt is very soft and the crown has the clay like feel others have described. Special thanks to Bamaboots for letting me snag it even after procrastinating.

You are s very fortunate man J Williams. Count your lucky stars to have had such opportunity to begin with a hat so highly coveted, such as this one. And such generosity extended your way. Not often do others let slide a hat so coveted that fits them, to another. You will find this spirit to be evident from time to time here on the lounge.
Enjoy wearing this marvelous hat often and for special occasions and let us enjoy it with you.
Again, welcome to the lounge.

Anxiously awaiting what may be the last hat I buy, sellers photos above of the beautiful 7X currently enroute to SoCal. Paid a premium, but looking at the condition I’m not sure I’d ever find another this well maintained. Plus this ticks almost every box I was hoping to check (50’s, 7XCB, ‘Last Drop’, OR specs) just missing the OR designation. Happy compromise though because I’ve yet to see a 50’s 7X OR with the Last Drop liner, only Westerns. Will post ‘action shots’ when it arrives.

Edited a few times to finally get the pics up.

This is a beautiful hat. I have a 50's sovereign quality without the open road designation coming most likely Tuesday. interested to see what the felt is like compared to the one I just recieved. Still need to see these action shots!

Thanks Bowen, I'm really enjoying my time here in the lounge and everyone has been very welcoming. I'm a cabinet / furniture maker by trade so I have an appreciation for well built high quality items. My wife always said I needed another hobby asides from woodworking but I don't think she anticipated a vintage hat obsession.

By the way that's quite a nice little stack of 7X CB's you have there on a previous post!

Also the name is Justin

That's a great looking hat and looks almost as good on you as it would have on me. Don't let that hat sit around. Wear it and enjoy it. It doesn't have to be babied, just cared for. Beautiful, rare hat and I'm glad you got it. Quite the "starter" hat. Great box as well.

Pictures still to come but since we are in very similar boats, I’ll add some additional thoughts after getting acquainted the last couple of days.
I said it ‘may be’ my last hat initially, and I still can’t imagine finding something nicer then this example. The felt molds to whatever positions you’d like, and the little bumps smooth out in a single fingers touch. I immediately changed the fedora bash to my preferred cattleman, and even though it’s not technically an OR the cattlemen looks great IMO.
This is my second vintage and overall 4th OR Style Stetson. I am actually a very big fan of my 2 modern 150 anniversaries RD ORs, for both fit and quality. My other vintage OR stingy brim clone is late 50s early 60s Royal. So while I am not nearly qualified to give an accurate assessment, the 7X is night and day different in texture. It’s an excellent addition color wise, as it’s a light tan/beige that’s a different shade then my others.
Fit for mine is, similar to yours, it feels custom made... I’ve never tried on a proper LO shape, but this unmarked roughly 7 5/8 sized 7x (tag missing) feels like my actual crown was used for the block... I couldn’t be happier with it! I wore it to Raconteurs concert at the Greek on Friday and it was all smiles and compliments. It was windy through the canyons but my 7x didn’t budge. The sweat is so comfy and conforms to my shape almost immediately. It fits so well, it just sometimes make you think this HAD to be made for me... cloud 9 so far.
As for your thoughts on how often to wear, I’m also similarly torn. Our examples could easily be set aside and stored properly for another 60 years, but I honestly don’t own enough spares to even think about that now. I want to enjoy this everyday, weather and activity permitting, but will also be sure to have regular cleanings and such. Mine already has some very light soiling and could benefit from having the crowned smoothed to remove the old crease shadows but I can’t think about parting with it now for that brief but agonizing process, I’m still in my honeymoon phase!
Some last few remarks. The hat is very clean overall, I found remnants of what looked to be the keyhole size tag, that had been ripped off, still partially sewn into the sweat seam. No other tags inside the sweat, but below are the pencil numbers and 6 digit # stamped in. Not sure what any of these mean but I assume it’s for reorder. Action shots still to come, but a quick one on head from yesterday’s morning coffee stroll and the under sweat pics above.

Edit: it lets me post all the pics except the 1 on head saying it’s too large? Why would every other iPhone photo work? Still clearly new at all this. Will try posting another, separately, later today.

Indoor with a telescoped 60’s Royal and modern RD. This is to show the cattleman crease it will from now until a while I’m sure. It keeps the shape nicely but always wants to bubble in certain spots.

Can’t say enough how happy and proud I am to have it. Will be flying back home to Detroit this weekend and desperately want to bring it but may stick with the modern RD. Will add more shots if it makes the journey since it will be a photo heavy (family reunion) trip.

Great to see you so thrilled with the hat, it’s a great one.

Just one thing: “...what may be the last hat I buy...”

I said that once or twice myself. :)

Here is a sweet little number, a 7X CB made in Mexico by Tardan under license. Later 50s. Definitely whiter (the last pic is closest to actual color) than my other CBs. Quality is very good, it is very soft but also heavier: I would really put it closer to an early 50s 4X than the US made 50s 7Xs.

I really do enjoy the lighter color though, a great change on a great hat!
