Ok so whaddya think about this guy on 'roids about to take the home run record in baseball? What do we do with jamokes like Sousa and McQuire who stole Roger Maris' one season HR record? Should there be asterisks?

I'm not even a sports fan but I think its wrong.[huh]

Sports

I am not a big sports fan, but I like some sports branches.
Yesterday I read that (sports) games were originally supposed to honor the Gods. The Olymp was the home of the Gods - right?

Later the games became perverted to panem et circenses to entertain people.
In the Cold War they were also a theatre - to show which system is the better. Nowadays in the age of extreme materialism they became a tool of money making and entertainment and they must increase performances and set new records year by year. This goes until a certain point naturally. After a while it does not.
1 Example. Myron: Discobolus, the Discus Thrower. A heavy athlete form the classic period. Compare him with todays lady discus throwers...
After a while they won't use steroids - more sophisticated tools will follow.
I firmly believe that sports is among the few real noble things in life but the love of money destroys a lot.

The Golden Calf has only changed its workplace from the EMEA domain and hires now its silhouette to the stock exchanges worldwide.

I was going to write a book on all the sports in which the participants did NOT use steroids. I canned the idea when I realized that no one would read a book about croquet.

Midnight Palace,

What about Martial Arts? Surfing? Skydiving? Endurance sports? Motor sports?
Did they use there also steroids? Please advise - as said before I am not an expert.

1. Yes. 2. I know they use other drugs. 3. Is that a sport now? 4. Yes, and other drugs. 5. I'd be shocked if there was no amphetimines or coke involved.

I don't think there's any point in asterisking. And Bonds has been testing clean in recent years.

Thank you, Viola

...for spreading some light in this twilight zone.

It seems 100% plausible what you wrote on drug abuse in sports-just too sorry to read that.[huh]

I heard one old time sports writer make mention of, "bowls of amphetamines" that used to sit in locker rooms, available to all takers. Nobody cared about that until steroids became an issue.

Personally I think it's more of a racist witch-hunt. How many grand jurys were convened to go after Mark McGuire when he broke Roger Maris' record? 0 ? And how many grand jurys does this make for Barry Bonds now? 6 ? 7 ?

Whether they put an asterisk in the record books or not, this will forever be known as the Steroids Era.

As opposed to the Cork Bats era? lol

If McGuire looked more like Donovan McNabb, you'da seen it. That's my guess, I'm sorry to say.

Jason Giambi has dinged positive for amphetimines RECENTLY, hasn't he? As well as admitting extensive steriod use in the past?

Race certainly has a lot to do with it, but so does Bonds' attitude. I haven't been following his story very much, I just laughed along with the rest of the country when Red Sox fans wore asterisk T-shirts to Bonds' debut at Fenway.

Baseball's the only sport I follow, and I have nothing but contempt for Bonds, McGuire, Giambi, Rodriguez, and all the rest of them. And when I found out about the greenie-gobbling and coke-sniffing in the '70s -- and yes, it was written up quite thoroughly in the 70s, I followed it closely at the time in The Sporting News and other publications -- I held those guys in equal contempt. I'm just naive enough and just old-fashioned enough to believe that cheaters should never win, and winners should never cheat.

I love baseball and have been a fan of my team for more years than I care to admit. But, as much as people think steroids is cheating, I wonder what the edge is, exactly, that a ballplayer gains from taking this drug. If Bonds had been taking steroids (if ?), I doubt that he is taking it now, and he still performs at a high level. So what exactly was the gain ? Where are the facts ? And if taking steroids was as rampant as we are led to believe, doesn't this make for a level playing field (almost) ?
I'm not a fan of drugs of any kind and I think they should all be banned, but maybe this is more of a witchhunt than we think.

The main function of steroids is to help an athlete recuperate from the deleterious effects of high intensity training/playing and the sport's associated injuries . They will allow an athlete to increase the frequency of his weight training schedule, which will lead to a greater increase in muscle mass and strength in a relatively short period of time. They will also shorten the recovery time for an injured athlete.

Actually, in the last three seasons his numbers have been dropping off and he's missing more games because of injuries. (He missed almost the entire 2005 season due to a knee injury). Also, he could still be using HGH for which there is currently no testing process in place.

Bonds testified in the BALCO grand jury investigation that he used steroids, albeit unwittingly. ;) BTW, he's being investigated for perjury as we speak and the word on the street is that an indictment is forthcoming. This will bring you up to speed on the Bonds fiasco.

Lizzie: I don't think A-Rod has ever been implicated in any kind of drug taking. As for the rest, I saw a TV show about the original Olympics, and they would not have understood this controversy at all. They had a real do whatever it takes attitude in 400BC. And the early ballplayers of 100 years ago were not Sunday School teachers, either. All sports, professional or amateur, gives the tempation to cheat, or get some kind of unfair advantage. The records from before 1946 should have an asterisk becasue black players couldn't compete. And records from one era can't be compared to another anyway, there are so many differences. The impulse to make absolute standards for intangible things is tempting, but spurious.
Barry Bonds will have his record, people will debate it forever, or until A-Rod overtakes him. Part of the fun of the game. At least in baseball the officials are clean, and there are not whole teams of dangerous felons walking around.
