Oh, that keyboard is to die for! Love it! Thanks for the link.
Yes, the keyboard is great. I've even seen a steampunk MAC and a steam punk I Pod Cover.
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman movie missed the mark only because it's nothing like Alan Moores graphic novel(in the novel Mena Harker is in charge and Alan Quartermain is/was a strung out opium addict that she found and asked to join the league)...The graphic novel is really a good read Alan Moore really did his research and if you love Jules Verne, HG Wells or victoriana than you will enjoy it.
I'm glad to discover other Steam Punk and Diesel Punk folks on the list. Cool:D

MYKE_AMEND_800x250a.jpg

From Gawker Artist Myke Amend
http://artists.gawker.com/5030780/myke-amend

http://mykeamend.com/new/

It is called “The Rescue” and incorporates Vernian overtones with a lovecraftian feel, slight peril to keep it interesting but not too busy, the HMS Ophelia (Abney Park’s Airship), a somewhat Nautilus-like submarine, and of course Tentacles - otherwise the elders would never grant their seal of approval. I hate to say it is “steampunk” because the intention of the piece is to illustrate a story, and to make art - timeless art. I’d hate for it to only be seen for that, as much as it does apply.

Steampunk Style Quiz

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Scientist

50% Elegant, 52% Technological, 50% Historical, 36% Adventurous and 23% Playful!

You are the Scientist, the embodiment of steampunk’s academic side. Where other technological styles might emphasize the gadgets of the genre, you realize there is more to science than doohickeys and gears. Your accessories are medical bags, test tubes, measuring instruments, and academic papers. You are more likely to carry a compass, quadrant, or ether-attuned spectrometer than a wrench or welding torch. You probably carry a timepiece, and your prolific reading gives you every right to wear spectacles. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of your style is that it combines the frock coats and bustle gowns of the 19th century with the trappings of Victorian science.

Well that was a fun quiz.

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Citizen

You are the Citizen, the embodiment of steampunk’s everyday side. You realize that there is far more to a rich, living environment than adventurers and lunatic engineers. For every gentleman-scientist or airship fleet admiral there are a dozen or more “ordinary people” who prevent the genre from devolving into a mass of cardboard caricatures, and you take pride in exploring the great diversity of a steampunk world’s population. Your clothing could easily come from any social group or society, and you are equally liable to dress upper, middle, or working class. However, the unifying feature to your fashion sense is that it does not get carried away with “looking steampunk,” instead creating a person who could have just stepped out of the crowd in a novel. Some people may claim that your style is too close to historical accuracy to be steampunk, but fortunately you know better.

It could not be more true

I thought I'd get citizen like Lady Day, but no! I'm an Aristocrat!

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Aristocrat

71% Elegant, 48% Technological, 57% Historical, 36% Adventurous and 14% Playful!

You are the Aristocrat, the embodiment of steampunk elegance and poise. For you, dressing steampunk is first and foremost about simply looking good, with accessories and details to follow. However, this does not mean that you ignore the demands of creating a “steampunk look.” Your outfits weave together a balance between technology and style, and between period accuracy and beautiful anachronism. While your fashion inspiration may come from anywhere across the Victorian social spectrum, you always find a way to make your outfit beautiful. You will probably be found in the clothes of the steam age elite simply because of the greater elegance available to them. Chances are you dress this way because you like it, and you would still dress in this manner even if steampunk was not a popular interest.

THE WINTER QUEEN

First book in the Erast Fandorin series.
www.amazon.com/Winter-Queen-Novel-Fandorin-Mysteries/dp/B000AKXCWS

In 1876 a young investigator with the Moscow police sets out to solve the apparent suicide of a university student, but soon lands in the middle of a far-reaching international conspiracy.

I just read this, quite well done novel. A touch of Doyle, & very subtle in Steampunkish implications.

Paul Verhoeven to direct the now-delayed movie

*GOGBOT *festival Enschede 18 -- 21 sept 08

*ART MEDIA MUSIC TECHNOLOGY*

18 -21 September PLANETART the 5th edition of GOGBOT, the multimedia festival in Enschede. GOGBOT is a platform for new developments in international art, in this year in particular the curious combination of media, technology and pop culture.

/Theme STEAMPUNK/

Robotics, virtual worlds, freak shows, macabre laboratories, lectures (in English), interactive machines, electronic music with old-fashioned sounds, enchanting video clips and a lot of steam, because *STEAMPUNK* is the GOGBOT theme of 2008. At STEAMPUNK modern technology and design is mixed with elements from the Victorian era, when technology was still new and romantic. Bruce Sterling and William Gibson, the 2 most famous sci fi authors and godfathers of Steampunk contributed to the festival GOGBOT.

I've always associated steampunk with a litterature style and closely related to various goth genres. I don't know why it wasn't until Friday that I thought of steampunk in the context of early 20th Cent. vintage apparel and interior design. My Art Deco, Atomic age and romantic gothic inspired plans for our home and my wardrobe make-over has been missing a red thread to tie the other genres together and I think steampunk as an aestetic and practical style might be the sollution.

I showed hub several images of steampunk but he's not really impressed. He rediculed the usb pens and they're not even the most "outrageous" steampunk design I've seen so I'm not sure I'll be able to convert him.:( I just think all his HAM "stuff" and his modern telegraph "thingy" will look out of place if I'm able to make over the rest of our home.

I haven't read any 80s-90s steampunk so my images of influence will mainly be from H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and a few other forgotten authors I used to read while growing up, whose names I can't remember now. Some of them crossed the gothic Victorian litterature genre.

Update! - I sparked hub's interest in a positive direction by showing him people's DIY telegraph sounders and I tried to show interest in vintage and retro CW keys. Well, it's a step in the right direction...

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - You can call it Jane Eyre meets the Addams family, but for the hundreds of Japanese girls who dress in Victorian dresses trimmed with lace, eyes rimmed with heavy black makeup, it's "Gothic-Lolita."

Showcasing yet another example of Japan's love for costume and role play, the women carried parasols, wore laced-up bodices and elaborately curly wigs, as wells heavy make up, during a Gothic-Lolita fashion event in Tokyo this week.

While I was never a huge fan, I liked the steampunk genre before I even knew what it was.

A good example, I think, is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Maybe dieselpunk. Either way, I don't think anyone has mentioned it. Also, the Crimson Skies game franchise.

What are those sunglasses/sandgoggle-type things called? Just "goggles", or do they have a specific name? They remind me of the goggles worn by Afrikakorps soldiers in Call of Duty 2 (scroll nearly to the bottom to see the ones I mean). Anyway, it would be nice to have a name for them.

ETA: Think I may just go with "sand goggles"...

We do talk about Dieselpunk and this movie, but it may be in the Sky Captain thread in the Moving Picture area. Several things that have been brought up in this thread are really Dieselpunk, or machine age (and I'm sure people are tired of me pointing this out :eusa_doh: ) . A recent example is the lamp just a few posts back at #292. Very cool lamp but definitely more Diesel than Steam. Even Indiana Jones skirts on Dieselpunk a little. The first scene in Hellboy is a perfect example too.

OK, I have to repeat another member's note several pages ago on this thread: the use of "punk" as a suffix for these movements, should no longer be acceptable. It is, at this juncture in time, cliched, passé, and inaccurate. AND, YES, I KNOW VERY VERY WELL THE ORIGIN OF THE SUFFIX, HAVING BEEN A PUNK ROCKER MYSELF IN THE 1980S AND HAVING READ Neuromancer very early on, along with Schismatrix.

For many, many years I have been using the term "1950s retro-future" to describe many or all of the (admittedly beautiful) things to which "diesel____" (I cannot even write that suffix any longer) refers.

You have to take an aesthetic stand somewhere.
