OK, I have to repeat another member's note several pages ago on this thread: the use of "punk" as a suffix for these movements, should no longer be acceptable. It is, at this juncture in time, cliched, passé, and inaccurate. AND, YES, I KNOW VERY VERY WELL THE ORIGIN OF THE SUFFIX, HAVING BEEN A PUNK ROCKER MYSELF IN THE 1980S AND HAVING READ Neuromancer very early on, along with Schismatrix.

For many, many years I have been using the term "1950s retro-future" to describe many or all of the (admittedly beautiful) things to which "diesel____" (I cannot even write that suffix any longer) refers.

You have to take an aesthetic stand somewhere.

I understand the "punk" thing, and I wouldn't mind another phrase. "1950s retro-future" doesn't really do it for me since "dieselpunk" period starts supposedly with the common use of the internal combustion engine, and really shines when it's set before WWII. 50's is more Atomic age. And it's not as fun to say either. It's kind of like calling Coke "Caramel Colored Fizzy Sugar Water" ;) .

Sorry to gravedig..

As a former member of the local punk/hardcore scene, I'm pretty well read so to say when it comes to the subcultures. There's your street punks (drunks and morons, pretty much the whole lot of 'em), crust punks (stoners..basically hippies but smellier), folk punks (see: former), etc.

Steampunk isn't really a subculture...it's more like a hobby for the more eccentric. I have a few art student friends, and they're into it. One is a sculptor by trade, and she's done some amazing things with old, broken clocks and watches. The other, a painter, has made herself a pretty cool pair of goggles and jewelry.

At least they're using the stuff, and I don't know them to ever use anything still working.

IF you happen to run across one, they're very, very useful contacts. They know all the best late victorian/early 20th century antique stores in the tristate area it seems.

My test results are....

5683353840764311285.jpeg___1_500_1_500_cb94de6a_.png

===================

Compared to other takers

* 1/100 You scored 4% on Elegant, higher than 1% of your peers.
* 16/100 You scored 31% on Technological, higher than 16% of your peers.
* 8/100 You scored 13% on Historical, higher than 8% of your peers.
* 93/100 You scored 76% on Adventurous, higher than 93% of your peers.
* 74/100 You scored 54% on Playful, higher than 74% of your peers.

====================

You are the Explorer, the embodiment of steampunk’s adventuring spirit. For you, clothing should be rugged and reliable, and just as functional as it is attractive. You probably prefer khaki or leather, and your accessories are as likely to include weapons as technological gizmos. You probably wear boots and gloves, and maybe a pith helmet. Most of what you wear is functional, and if you happen to wear goggles people had better believe that you use them. In addition to Victorian exploration gear, your outfit probably includes little knickknacks from your various travels. Above all, you are a charming blend of rugged Victorian daring and exotic curiosity.

Steampunk - Myths & Legends
10 November 2008 - 03 February 2009

An artistic challenge to explore gears, springs, brass and steam
set around some of the world's best known stories.

The largest CGChallenge ever, with over US$220,000 in prizes!
In this, the 23rd CGChallenge, entrants are challenged to depict their favorite myth or legend, with a steam-punk aesthetic, via a still image or video.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steampunk is the application of advanced steam age technology to a modern or science fiction setting.

This challenge asks you to render traditional myths and legends in the steampunk style using elements of gears, springs, brass and steam power. Re-imagine legendary characters from some of the world's most ancient stories, such as a steam-powered minotaur, or a Zeppelin-mounted Thor, hurling lightning bolts from the sky.

A movie that I think portrays the "turn-of-the-last-century, science fiction, action adventure"* genre is _The Assassination Bureau, Ltd._ (1969), starring Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg. Its based on a Jack London short story, and, while played tongue-in-cheek, displays many of the facets of "High Technology in Edwardian Guise" that we have come to expect. And it has one of the best Zeppelin scenes ever committed to film.

Haversack.
*I really rather dislike the term "-punk". To my ears it still carries the taint of its original meaning. Sort of like "gunsel."

I enjoy steampunk or retrofuturism very much. I enjoy the fantasy of films like "Bladerunner" (40s noir mix/ w. a 80's imagination of high-tech), "Brazil" and some of the french films like "City of Lost children".

I'm not too surprised by this (although I must say I have a better looking moustache; it's more natural-looking).
