Stacy Adams Fedoras

I have a pile of wool crushers, Jaxon, Stetson, Scala, etc. that have & do serve me well. Now, most of these are treated for water repelling but are decent lids for the $$$. These are mainly hats used for foul weather & hiking/camping duties. Wool is a good insulator even when wet but a wool hat will eventually break down from water damage once the repellant weakens. Fur felts will come back to near new shape where wool won't. That hat is okay & as you move into hat fanatic state & you will, it will be a good beater & you'll more than get your money's worth. IMHO

I like that hat, and think that with some care, it should give many years of good service, after all, we are not all Indiana Jones types.

The differences in appearance, durability, and overall quality when comparing wool felt to fur felt doesn't have any relevance to Indiana Jones fans. There are, after all, far more wool felt Indiana Jones "replicas" out there than fur felt.

Back to Owney_Madden: There is nothing wrong with the hat that you bought, it will just require different treatment and handling than a fur felt. Apples and oranges, basically. Try not to get it wet (it will shrink and, eventually, stink) and you should be just fine.

It isn't that wool hats are "no good", it is just that they lack a few qualities that fur felt hats usually have. This shouldn't stop you from purchasing a wool felt fedora that appeals to you aesthetically though. I have a couple wool felt fedoras that look good and are comfortable.

Unless they have been treated very heavily with proofing sprays and whatnot, you need to treat wool felt hats like you would straw hats: try not to get them wet! Otherwise, they (both straw and wool felt) will hold up decently well.

If you are on a budget and want a fur felt hat that is not much different in price than that Stacy Adams, you could try the Jaxon Bogart as a "first" hat. I don't have one, but I have noticed many people being surprisingly pleased with it. Find it here: Jaxon Bogart

Please forgive me. I certainly didn't intend to impugn Indy fans. What I should have written is "adventurer" types, for example: one for whom hiking the Appalachian Trail is a just a stretch of the legs. In other words, one who's lifestyle would require a hat of equal durability.

well, depending on how i like it in person if it ever arrives . . ., i might just get some of that scotch guard and load it down and try to keep it as nice as possible. I like the look of the hat, reminds me of hats you see a lot of people wearing during FDR's presidency. still gotta get a teardrop sometime.

I just talked to my Dad about his hats, he has an old wool one he wore when in egypt back in 80(pre indiana jones mind you ), that he wore out there through rain/shine and its held its shape and done alright. he has another just like it that he left here in the states and the shape is identical just the one looks mighty faded. Here is a pic of some of his fedoras & hats

Top left, Adams Exec. don't remember the others aside from the two on the far right. bottom one being the one he wore while in egypt and the one on top being the one he left stateside.

That gambler straw on the bottom-left looks a lot like a Stetson I have that's made of "koa straw," apparently a lightweight plant material.

There's probably nothing wrong with the hat you just bought, as long as you treat it the way a wool felt hat should be treated. And as DerMann suggested, having one wool felt hat is not a bad thing, since along the line, it can become your beater. If you spend any amount of time on this forum, chances are, your future holds at least half a dozen hats anyway

There's nothing wrong with Bailey hats either. I own one wool Bailey which I thought had quite a nice finish for a wool felt, and was also relatively soft. Forget about rebashing them though; I've ruined a couple of good wool hats that way.

As a matter of fact, I just bought a Bailey from the fedora store: The New Yorker "Sinatra" , which I intend to use as a beater. I wanted to have something that I wouldn't mind wearing standing next to a wood chipper.

I think a wool felt is a great way to test the waters...you'll find that if you really like wearing fedoras, things like brim width (2 3/8 or 2 1/2???), taper and height of the crown all start to take on way more importance than they really should (did I really say that out loud?). Once you have a few favorite bashes, you'll need them in all the right colors...and so on. Less expensive wool felts can certainly help bridge the $ gap to keep a young man in a variety of hats until his ship comes in.

There's not a thing wrong with the wool felt picked out by Owney_Madden. (Not that I own a Stacy Adams hat, mind you.) It's a good-looking hat. As Hoss & da Posse mentioned, wool felts are a good way for those new to fedoras to figure out what they like, or even if they really like fedoras. I had a fedora and a western before I decided that I really like fedoras, both of which had been gifts. The first one that I actually purchased was a $20 Burlington Coat Factory hat. A year and a half down the road, it's one of my beaters, but I still enjoy wearing it. When I first arrived here, several people advised me to look into Akubra, because they're very reasonably priced fur felts. It was good advice, but Akubra prices seemed high, and I just couldn't bring myself to shell out the dough at that point, so I went and got my BCF Beater. Now I own 2 Akubras. Do I like my Akubras? Absolutely! Am I sorry that I bought the BCF Beater? Not a bit.

For what it's worth, I'd also suggest to Owney_Madden that you keep an eye on Akubra prices. There are tons of Akubra threads around here right now, and for good reason. The prices are just about as low as I've seen them. What used to be about an $80 hat is now going for around $65, maybe less. I've seen wool felts that go for more than that. If you can get a fur felt (that you like) for a price comparable to wool felts, you should. If you don't like it, you may be able to sell it through the Classifieds here at TFL. Speaking of the TFL Classifieds, I'd also suggest that you check those regularly. Lots of nice hats go through there, either because someone's thinning out a hat collection, an ebay hat arrived and was the wrong size, someone didn't like the color . . . all sorts of things.

Oh, and like others have said, Owney_Madden, your dad has good taste in hats. Nice collection!

just arrived! it looks pretty cool in person. Not sure if pics represent it accurately. However its a little big and a little stiff atm. Hopefully it shrinks just enough to fit nicely, as it stands it is very comfortable and keeps the sun off my face a lot better than my ball cap

I would suggest waiting to feel so bad until you receive the product and inspect it and then decide. Then, if you don't like it, send it back and get a fur felt! I have many quality wool felt hats that I personally wear as well.

Seriously, it looks good on ya. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and fondly remember it as your first hat. I still have my first wool felt fedora, an '84 Indiana Jones number. I didn't wear it to death and didn't abuse it. It still looks good, but it's a tad too small these days.

80 bucks for a Stacy Adam's furfelt hat?

So i found a fedora online for 80 bucks brand new on clearance in my size. What's your guy's oppinions for 80 bucks for a fur felt hat? i'm struggling to find one under 100 bucks and this is the closest one right now. The brand is Stacy Adams, and ive heard mixed oppinions on them.
