Spear point collar shirts

The 16" collar fits my shoulders just about perfectly maybe a fraction narrow but it's too tight on the collar and a bit baggy on the chest.

Vecona Vintage now have them too in white oxford and grey chambray.

I haven't ordered any plain white shirts from Luxire, but I have had very good results with the Oxford shirting they offer.

With the brief mentions of collarless shirts - is there a thread to post collarless shirts on? I've got some nice ones with bib-fronts that people may be interested in.

I've got a couple of white spear-point (separate) collars. I'll post them sometime.

I don't think there is such a thread? I don't recall ever seeing one. Try entering the following in Google:

"The Fedora Lounge Collarless shirt"

(It's usually a more accurate search than the forum software can do).

If nothing comes up, start one!

I've ordered several white shirts from Luxire. Go with the white warzone oxford. It's formidable, but softens with washes.

Here's a couple of mine folks.
Fairly reserved by this Thread's standards, but seem to have a lot of work gone into them.

'Dare and Dolphin Ltd.', with the label unfortunately destroyed. I have a duplicate of this presumably from the same fellow. 3" point.



Rather complicated construction. Is this typical? There's a slot for the bones, but I took them out as they were very very crumpled.


An unknown brand (whatever was stamped on the inside of the neckband has long since become illegible). Again with complicated construction, and rather nice straps under the collar presumably for the tie to slide through and make it easier to get on? 3" point.



Bonus round:
Sorry to deviate, but this is a rather nice detachable tab-collar. 'Climax Wonder Semi-Stiff', not sure how old, but the gap for your tie knot would suggest perhaps pre-1940s?

Nice bunch there, Eddie! I have a collar with the same peculiar strap. If anyone know the purpose I'd love to know.

The tab collar is VERY nice. Please post it in the tab collar thread as well. Tab collars are really rare, and I'm very interested in buying yours if it's for sale. They were popular from the late teens up until the 30s, although by the end I think they were mostly attached, so my guess is that yours is from the 20s.

The strap, I think, is to do with the difficulty of getting a tie on a starched collar. You loop it through the straps before you put the collar on, turn down the collar, and then attach it to your shirt. It cuts out the difficulty of turning down a starched collar when it's around your neck. If that makes sense? I can post pictures of what I mean if you like.

Thanks for the info on the tab collar. I'm afraid it's my size and I do wear it, so it isn't for sale, sorry! If I change my mind I'll let you know though!

Yeah, that makes sense. Mine is soft, though, although I guess that it's possible that it's been stiff once upon a time.

Understandable. I wouldn't sell the one that I have either.

Hmmm come to think of it I'm not sure mine are actually 'starchable'. I'm assuming the same process applies though. It perhaps means that if you were wearing the same collar days in a row (which I understand was usually the case), then you could just loosen your tie and lift the whole thing over your head. Maybe!

I used to have starched collars, but found that it was very difficult to put a tie under them. The next best is detachable soft collars, which work out well given that collars are the first thing to go on a shirt. My father tells me that in London in the early 50s, wearing a soft collar to work was still pretty much frowned upon, and that people would carry an extra collar on the train because of smog, and put it on when they reached their offices.

Assuming that detachable soft collars were common, it tells us that people expected to get many years value from a shirt, and were probably prepared to spend quite a lot on the shirt, supplementing it with the collars to extend its life. I recall my mother "turning" collars back in the 80s.

Is it possible today to order detachable spear point 3.5 inch collars when buying a collarless shirt? Would Luxire do it?

Yes, you can get a detachable spearpoint collar from Luxire, either in the same fabric as the shirt or in white (or both ).

I think there's a photo of a Luxire shirt with detachable collars further back in this thread. I believe Luxire will make spare collars for 20 American Dollars. However, I have just had 4 detachable collars made for me by Natty Shirts. I'm very pleased with them and they cost 5 American Dollars each.

That's a good deal Dreamofgilgamesh! I might get on that. In fact, I'm tempted to get just the collar (not the neckband) and replace some of the collars on my normal shirts. Cheaper than having full spearpoint shirts made up!

I have ordered every one of my Luxire shirts this way. The detachable soft collars work fine. Personally though, after my first couple I pulled a half inch off the collar points.
