Thought you folks might get a kick out of this. Had a doctor's appointment today. When the doc came in, I said hi how ya doin' and he said "Well I see you've got that whole Wyatt Earp thing going on."lol

I was wearing my brown Borsolino, Carhart barn coat, braces over a hickory shirt, jeans and Blundstones. Just my everyday threads. I had recently shaved off my beard and left what is really a rather heroic handlebar moustache.

The guy's a recent arrival from South Africa, guess he's not used to real clothes outside of the movies.

I believe there is another long thread about this, but I'll bite. I wear my fedoras and 40's pant's/winbreaker combo's out every day. There are several shirts that I get profuse compliments on, but on the whole, Vancouver is a very conservative town, and as such individualism does NOT go over well here, at all. I once had a guy follow me for about three blocks screaming "Al Capone" at me, trying to pick a fight. I get a lot of "Halloween's over" comments, and the like. Particularly if I'm going out. Some very positive, but mostly negative reactions. Like I said, this place is uber-square, conformist and ugly @ times. It's not like I go out all that often, and pinstripes aren't exactly radical. I don't wear anything like zoot suits or such. Just quality 40s/50s threads.

US cities- espec. SF and Seattle: nothing but complimentary things said. 'Nuff said.

The ruins of the golden era.
Unfortunately, whenever you go against the grain; you will receive some flack for it. However negative comments can have negative repercussions. For instance, Tony Kornheiser was suspended from ESPN for his comments about Hannah Storm's outfit. Story here---
ESPN suspends Tony Kornheisr for comments about sportscaster Hannah Storm's wardrobe

Personally I don't understand why people offer their negative opinion about someone's outfit. The person wearing the outfit is unlikely to respond "Oh you are right. This outfit is silly. I will never wear this again. Thanks for your help."
Generally, when someone is challenged they are unlikely to forfeit. It is a futile effort on the negative person's part.

Lastly, it is a testament to society's progress that we have the time to critique dress instead of worry about food, shelter, and other more important issues.

Good one S-o-A.

I actually didn't take umbrage at his observation, rather found it funny, especially considering that the guy is an otherwise real decent fellow, but who dresses like a refugee himself. He just hasn't gotten used to small Canadian ranching/logging towns yet.

Chas, you have my sympathies. Vancouver is anathema to me, but then again I'm not the big city type. What also amazes me is that aside from being rude, uncouth and loutish, calling somebody out you don't even know is so stupid considering the number of really rough customers around now days who are not shy about being armed and cranky. How many murders have there been in Van in the last year around the whole gang thing?

Cool that you have the cojones to be who you are.

I've been in really rural Ireland so i've tried not to stick out too much, i've only worn my fedora once in Galway City. No bad reactions really, infact i bumped into a fellow wearing a fedora as well, we doffed hats, shame i didn't get a photo. I got a few dr. zhivago comments from some young guys at a pub but that was it. Problem here is that everyone.. EVERYONE in Ireland under 25 it seems lives in track suits. Everyone over that age wears the old tweed jacket, flat cap and sweater getup.. but the young people all dress like its a uniform! So naturally wearing anything outside of this makes you stand out. I generally try to just go with the flat cap or peacoat and such and don't get as many comments. Its quite a shame really, but its what i expected.

Conservative, hmm? I've spent a good bit of time in V Town (dressed down, admittedly), and left with the impression that almost anything goes there, as long as it is - for lack of a better term - Politically Correct.

Maybe they think you're the conservative?

No, it's definitely conservative. Politically correct is a form of conservativism - which demands hemogeneity in language, behaviour and thought. Individuality is not a hallmark of Vancouver style.

So, no, I don't consider myself a conservative.
