I'll try and answer as best i can without giving everything away at the same time. I have two main felters I buy from and most of the stuff I buy is not straight off the shelf. The simple things you could ask for is weight, color or amount of stiffener used.

To keep this on track Spader wanted a ( without giving any details). He asked for portugese beaver felt. He wanted it light weight and with very little stiffener and he really didn't like any of the american beaver felt hats that he saw. The costumer told me they tried several. I told them I could but I also said that i don't buy off the self and like spader like very pliable fedoras. I suggested I send them an american beaver that i get to my specs with my pouncing. Costumer said Spader liked it so much that asked for duplicate. Then they order 3 other colors (portugese) with (2 of each color)

As for modern and vintage felt. I know that part of the felting process has been shorten and rabbit felt has taken the hit more then beaver because of it. skip some of the steps or skip how many times you use those steps to save time. Time equals money and that is the world we live in. my opinion is to get a great finish to a hat body, you must have the best felt possible with a hatter that versatile in his knowledge of Pouncing/finish. Hatter plays a big role to the finish but you have to start with a good foundation.

If you can how has the rabbit felt taken a hit ? If you can say what step is being shortened or skipped ?

I love all these celebrities that are wearing Fedora hats....it gives the hat industry a big boost...which in turn gives US more hat pickings!

You would think the UK would have a lot of men’s hat shops but it’s crazy how little there are hopefully more open

Well Hatters and Hat Shops are not always everywhere, even here in the USA. But if the current trend of people wearing Fedora hats will continue to increase, I really think it can bring about more Hatters and more Hat Shops!

The sad thing is most people don’t give a shit and they want to buy a cheap one from China and so putting hatters out of business for example Borsalino has said they are having trouble but still be making hats, I guess it’s celebs that are keeping Borsalino alive for the moment.
