Laura hold these hands and count my fingers
Laura touch these lips you once desired
Lay your head upon my chest hear my heart beat
Gently run your fingers through my hair
Touch these ears that's listened to your wishes
Most of them fullfilled and that's a lot
Let your soft gentle hands caress my body
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got

Tell me what he's got I can't give you
Must be something I was born without
You took an awful chance to be with another man
So tell me what he's got that I ain't got

Laura see these walls that I built for you
Laura see this carpet that I layed
See those fancy curtains on the windows
Touch those satin pillows on your bed
Laura count the dresses in your closet
Note the name upon the checkbook in your bag
And if there's time before I pull this trigger
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got

Tell me what he's got I can't give you
Must be something I was born without
And if there's time before I pull this trigger
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got
Laura tell me what he's got that I ain't got

Al Jolson -- Sonny Boy (1928)

Climb upon my knee, Sonny Boy
Though you're only three, Sonny Boy
You've no way of knowing
There's no way of showing
What you mean to me, Sonny Boy

When there are grey skies
I don't mind the grey skies
You make them blue, Sonny Boy
Friends may forsake me
Let them all forsake me
I still have you, Sonny Boy

You're sent from Heaven
And I know your worth
You've made a Heaven
For me right here on Earth
When I'm old and gray, dear
Promise you won't stray, dear
For I love you so, Sonny Boy

And the angels, they grew lonely
And they took you cause they were lonely
And I'm lonely too, Sonny Boy

one of the creepiest records ever is don't go down in the ine dad, especially stan kirkby's recording from i think 1910 or so
also down in te willow garden by the everly brothers, very shivery.
Any versions of the song ready for the river (the shivery river, so get the river ready for me) guess what that's about

paul robeson singing go down moses, with that great thundering bass voice of his. Sounds like he's the one getting ready to smite you down, let alone Jesus.

This one stirs something in me:

WHEN MY MORNING COMES AROUND by IRIS DEMENT

When my mornin' comes around,
no one else will be there
so I won't have to worry
about what I'm supposed to say
and I alone will know
that I climbed that great big mountain
and that's all that will matter
when my mornin' comes around

When my mornin' comes around,
I will look back on this valley
at these sidewalks and alleys
where I lingered for so long
and this place where I now live
will burn to ash and cinder
like some ghost I won't remember
When my mornin' comes around

When my mornin' comes around,
from a new cup I'll be drinking
and for once I won't be thinking
that there's something wrong with me
and I'll wake up and find
that my faults have been forgiven
and that's when I'll start living
When my mornin' comes around

Guy Clark's song "Randall Knife" really hits home with me because my father was a WWII vet also. If you don't know what a Randall Knife is then do a Wikipedia search for "Randall Made Knives". After that listen to the song below.

PS: Speaking of songs that make you shiver or cry, I should have mentioned that the guy in the white hat that asks him to play "Randall Knife" is Jerry Jeff Walker who wrote "Mr. Bojangles".

I had never heard "The Box" so I just listened to it. That one really hit home too. When my dad died I found a small wooden box in his dresser drawer and in it was his dog tags, an old faded picture of a P-47 Thunderbolt, a pamphlet given to all the American soldiers before they invaded Okinawa, an old faded aerial photo of Ie Shima ( the island he was on when the war ended ) and a form letter from President Truman with his name typed on it thanking him for his service. The Okinawa pamphlet had Gin Rummy scores written in pencil all over it. As far as I know those are the only personal items he kept from WWII.
