songs that make you shiver/cry

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday always gets me. Even if you don't listen to the words, the melody is haunting.

I had been reading this thread, but hadn't anything to add. Until yesterday, when my iPod called that up!

Another song recorded by Billie Holliday -- and numerous other artists -- was Gloomy Sunday, also known as the Hungarian Suicide Song. It was banned in several countries following anecdotal reports of people inexplicably killing themselves after hearing the song.

I particularly like this version...

The Band Perry -- If I Die Young

Officer Ryan Bonaminio was a Riverside, CA police officer and Iraq veteran who was gunned down in the line of duty on November 7, 2010. I knew Ryan from another forum that I used to frequent.

Given that only a couple of days ago, the last living combat veteran of WW1 passed away (and in Australia), I'd like to offer this little ditty about Gallipoli that always brings a tear to my eye: And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Here's another great song written by Eric Bogle about WWI, this time about the battles fought in France. Performed by The Fureys with Davey Arthur (this is actually the first version of the song I heard so many years ago).

Another song that really touches me every time. Caledonia by Dougie McLean. Simple and beautiful.

Sticking with the folksy theme, here's a wonderful song perforemed by the equally wonderful Kate Rusby (with Kathryn Roberts), called 'Exile'. This is one of a few songs that accompanied me through a really tough time a few years ago.

My late father and, professional musician extrordinaire, Alberto's alto saxaphone solo of "somewhere over the rainbow". it was a song that whenever he heard it brought tears to him because of his childhood recollections of going to see the movie as a child which was shown on 2 seperate days because of the legnth.
he paid 10 cent admission.

THE greatest song recorded in the 50's. Maybe forever.

Parked out on a dirt lane. Dashboard lights. Summer night breeze drifting in the windows. Dew forming on the windshield. This comes on the radio. You and me. No one else in the world. We were young once. In my eyes, you always will be.
