You're absolutely right, that's the criticism many have with the 'so-called'* journalists the New York Times and similar organs of the media.

* My bon mot to your Lenin illustration.

** "so-called" is a standard sneering adjective of Soviet agit-prop.

You know there are people who go to school for journalism.
Some even graduate.
Like any field, there are wash-outs & the corrupt. Just like in medicine or politics or construction...

Remember when we watched American shows years ago with (now) journalists involved and they introduced themselves thus "Hi, Ma'am I'm a reporter".

The idea was you reported the FACTS not your opinion or confected personal outrage...just the facts Ma'am....

Well, thats a TV...
And the 'just the facts Ma'am' line was used by detectives in Dragnet.

Lets not get started with Clark Kent or Lois Lane and anyone who yells STOP THE PRESSES.

What arrogance was expressed towards the rest of the country?
Feraud, I am one of those fortunate enough to have friends from NYC and enjoy our kidding back and forth about the supposed superiority of one place over another [ same with my buddies from Texas]. Underneath the "attitude" is a genuine love for their city and the acceptance that there are other good places to be. However, The Times lacks that care and warmth. I used to subscribe just for the crossword puzzle and was always struck by the writer's and editor's often demeaning comments or opinions . Terms like "rube', "unenlightened". etc. were used. After a while I just gave up on them.

Thanks for the reply. I have a better idea of where your comments are coming from. I am sure you would agree the sentiment goes both ways. Any local daily is likely to display regional prejudices. What newspaper doesn't think they are the best game in town. ;)

That is simply judging a book by it's cover. It has nothing to do with the NY Times and does not clarify an inside story that might coincides with the cover. Taking into the account the number of New Yorker covers over the years (is it a few thousand? ) hardly bolsters the sentiment that The New Yorker has some sort of arrogant agenda towards those west of New Jersey.

So how bad is it right now for plain old newspapers?

It’s so bad that we’re not even pretending otherwise anymore by conspicuously declining to refer to our own news that things are bad.

It’s so bad that the American Society of Newspaper Editors just canceled its annual convention because of economic woes besetting members.

The association had been planning an active agenda to teach newspaper people how to adapt to the multiple new platforms.

So, with no apparent sense of irony, the ASNE said in its news release announcing the cancellation that it would be imparting this vital information to members online.

In other words, newspaper people will be directed to the Internet for any help in how to save their paper product.

I’m fixing to tweet that one.

Relevant to this thread I had saved this clipping the other day. I found it funny but sad.
I completely understand it as I am seeing the antique business this way. Blogs, news stories, twitter, facebook, etc.
