Well, you know, they don't call her the Grey Lady for nothing.
Personally, for all its faults, I'd hate to think of New York without the Times. You'll still see more useful information, and depth of coverage, than in any other paper in the country. And its alleged liberal bias, while there, is greatly exaggerated. (Oops. Did I just stray over the line? Sorry.)
I do think that sometimes the Times does reflect the natural parochiality of New York vis a vis the rest of the country. But there's no place in the world that doesn't suffer from its own little version of local bias. Can't escape from it.

Amen to that. Try being a New Yorker in New England

You mean the paper for the New York that should have survived.

1975, the year of Drop Dead, was Year Zero for NY as it is today. The soul of the place changed. It will always be Taxi Driver, no matter how spruced and commercial it gets.

I disagree. Ive lived in NY all my life. I've worked in the TimesSquare area for over 20 years. If you think that the current decade compares to the outright hostility & danger of the late 20th century, then youre living in fear of fear.

While I am sorry for those working there, the plight the NY Times is in strikes me as poetic justice, due to their arrogance towards the rest of the country. Their superiority complex seems to be suffering a decompression.

Its not just the NYT, its all newpapers & publishing in general.
Consider all the magazines that have folded:

The advertising world is in a shambles.
Iits not funny when a city like Philadelphia has had its newspapers go bankrupt. Are we really looking forward to being a nation that looks to unsubstantiated blogs for information?

No kidding. That's why I said 'illustrated thusly', the arrogant NYT perspective of the rest of the country. Clear now?

That's my greatest fear, quite frankly. On the Internet not only does having no qualifications as a journalist whatsoever not matter, it's actually considered a point in your favor if you don't. Idiocracy Marches On.

And what "qualifies" one to be a journalist? Idiocracy can reign anywhere.

I didn't see anything in the grad courses that bestowed Fourth Estate superpowers on the students, when any layman with a good command of his native language and an ability to rationally express himself can produce a better product.

Just because someone can type, doesnt make them a writer.
Just because someone has some facts, doesnt make them an expert.
Also there is information & there is misinformation.

Why was that a NewYokerMag cover story about the NYT?

Don't look at what publication banner is at the top of the illustration, look at what the illustration shows.

You're absolutely right, that's the criticism many have with the 'so-called'* journalists the New York Times and similar organs of the media.

* My bon mot to your Lenin illustration.

** "so-called" is a standard sneering adjective of Soviet agit-prop.

The ability to accurately sift fact from rumor, for one. The ability to do thorough original research without "aggregating" someone else's work, for another. Both points sadly lacking in most of what I've seen in the blogosphere.

Remember when we watched American shows years ago with (now) journalists involved and they introduced themselves thus "Hi, Ma'am I'm a reporter".

The idea was you reported the FACTS not your opinion or confected personal outrage...just the facts Ma'am....
