Welcome to the Lounge. Glad to see some of your favorites. I was in Peters Bros., a while back, and was quite impressed. You have arranged your pics in order of descending value (Peters Bros. to Country Gentleman), which raises an interesting point. If you like a hat, and it makes you feel good when you wear it (regardless of what it cost), then it's a good hat!

Yep, all the hats have a ribbon except for the Stetson.

As strange as this sounds, I like the Country Gent the best. Though, they all suit you well. It seems you've found just the right style for yourself!

English Dunn & Co c.1933

Hello!

I too am a new member to the Fedora Lounge. I have a very specific hat collection; English fur felt snap brims of the 1920's and 1930's.

I have quite an extensive collection which also includes some nice American and European pieces. For now though, here is my favourite hat, and the one that started my facination with English snap brims- a 1933 G. A. Dunn & Co top-of-the-range navy blue model, Originally belonging to a George Herbert Leek.

It has a "Real Roan Leather" sweatband and pink satin lining with oil cloth protector. It has a raw edge (which most of my hats have) and a nicely detailed four-folded bow. size is perfect for me; 7 1/8.

N.B: because I have so many hats, I am thinking of adding a 'secret' page to my website with only links from the Fedora Lounge... I have already started edditing all the photos, so I'll keep you posted!

Alchemy, I like the Edgely the best, and thanks to you I now have another name to add to my Cavanagh-Edge-name list.

That's a fine, fine hat. I'm a fan of that period, myself, and can't wait to see more of your collection. The color of the sweatband is really unique, compared to American hats, not to mention the liner. Very, very nice, sir!

I can see I'm going to have a great time sharing my collection and building a friendship with you guys...

I suppose this hat should really be posted near the one I showed you above; no provenance with this one I'm afraid although one could assume a similar date, c.1933. This is a grey G.A. Dunn & Co Homburg and has exactly the same liner treatment as the snap brim. I have an awful confession to make; when restoring this one (it was white with mildew inside and out!) I lost the paper label with the style name, size and re-order info- I have already cursed myself so you don't have to!

Welcome to the lounge! (Well, I'm kind of new myself, actually)

Now I'm curious, what is the width of the brim on this? I quite like the proportions of it, tall crown with what appears to be a narrow brim (2, maybe 2 1/4 inches?).

1930's hat dimensions

Hi there! Thanks for your interest in this hat. I’m afraid I do not have this one with me at the moment; I will update you on the critical dimensions when we are next reunited… In the meantime, I have this Battersby London 1930’s Ambassador model to hand, it is a very similarly proportioned hat to the Dunn, although the crown is slightly tapered whereas the Dunn is a straight-sided example (which I prefer). Most of the hats I have from this period conform to similar dimensions, so this should give you a rough idea of the size ratios. I absolutely understand this is not the answer to your question, but hopefully it will satisfy your curiosity in the short term!

Battersby:
Size: 7 1/8 (English) = 7 1/4 American
Crown Height (while bashed with centre dent): 5 1/4"
Brim depth: 2 1/4"
Grosgrain band width: 2"

N.B: This is a great everyday hat for wearing and enjoying; it has had many home-made repairs in its life, some not so good but I decided not to renovate it- the character and charm of the original hand repairs are a reminder of the thrifty times of the interwar and WWII years- its history!

What did you do to undo the mildew?

Hi Warbaby,

Because this hat was stripped right down to its component parts, I was able to sponge clean each part with a weak solution of Detol (that’s a brand, do you have that in America?) which is a non-bleaching disinfectant used on carpets, household goods etc. and removed the mould like that. Very easy to do, but a little smelly!
