Thanks for that.

Love this line about Beaut (Fury):"but his very best trick was earning $5,000 a week." lol

Great stuff. I'm proud to know the neice of Seabiscuit's trainer, as well as Seattle Slew's grandson (a big, kinda scary fella!).

I'll never forget first seeing the Seabiscuit movie. The whole audience was so into that big race scene, there was actually applause when he won (Like we didn't know the outcome already!).

And the Johnny Horton song about Comanche? Well, I've seen some grown men get teary-eyed over that!

Horses are special folks, aren't they?

I love horses and wish I had more time and money to spend with them.

There is a wonderful story that was told to me by local bandleader Dal Richards; he had a gig working the Panarama Roof at the Hotel Vancouver from the 40's to the early 60's. One night, a local theatre owner got the idea to get his current visiting act to come up and visit Dal and his band in the club. As Dal was giving the downbeat for the last number of the night, who should stroll into the club but none other than Roy Rogers and Trigger.

Roy rode Trigger up to the Vancouver Hotel, into the service elevator and took him up to the nightclub. True story.

General Washington's two horses were Nelson, and Blueskin....

Mr. John Hunter, an English visitor to Mt. Vernon in 1785, in a letter to a friend wrote the following:

"When dinner was over, we visited the General's stables, saw his magnificent horses, among them "Old Nelson," now twenty-two years of age, that carried the General almost always during the war. "Blueskin," another fine old horse, next to him, had that honor. They had heard the roaring of many a cannon in their time. "Blueskin" was not the favorite on account of his not standing fire so well as venerable "Old Nelson." The General makes no manner of use of them now. He keeps them in a nice stable, where they feed away at their ease for their past services.'"

General Washington's horses

Now that's a truly charming and touching story.
My own favorite family horse story involves Zev, the 1923 Kentucky Derby winner.
My grandad, as you may guess from my avatar, was a horseman. He had been a jockey in his younger years, and still was an exercise rider and trainer when my mom was young.
One day in 1924, when she was 4 years old, he took her into the stables at Belmont Park, and sat her up on the back of Zev. He told her, "Well, daught, now you can always say you've ridden a Derby winner."
