My whole life, I've seen that. My parents taught the importance of washing your hands every time you hit the bathroom. It was just what you did and I still do it. But yeah, even to this day, I see plenty of people go do their business and walk right out. Disgusting.

Even more disgusting is when you see a restaurant with the cooks or kitchen crew standing out in front of the building sucking away on cigarettes during business hours. I've seen this in front of greasy spoons, but I've also seen it in front of overpriced "fine dining" establishments. There is no circumstance on earth that would entice me to go inside a such a restaurant.

On Monday, during the final hole of the playoff round of the Open Championship, 84 year old BBC announcer Peter Alliss said, as the camera panned to eventual winner Zach Johnson's wife Kim, "She is probably thinking, 'if this goes in I get a new kitchen.' "

This crated such an outrage on social media that the BBC issued a formal apology for his "sexist" remarks.

I don't get it. Are we so PC as a society now that such an offhand remark creates controversy. I'd probably receive a public flogging for some of the things I've said, and still say without giving it much thought.

Oh and the winnings were over $1.5 million U. S. Lady Bamaboots would have been thinking new house.

Comments from TV sportscasters are generally so universally stupid that I don't see any point of being offended by them. What I find offensive are people who use the excuse "Hey, I'm not PC" as an all-purpose excuse for being an a**hole.

In my world of working outside, the general rule is that you should have to urinate every couple of hours, and if you don't, you're not drinking enough water. We also have urine color charts, which you're supposed to use to gauge your level of hydration. If you're voiding what looks like maple syrup, you're in big trouble.

Taking vitamins also makes for an array of colors !

I'd find football broadcasts much more enjoyable if I were spared the inane commentary. The game itself makes for a good TV show. I'm far from alone in that view, judging from the ratings. But so many of the announcers speak almost exclusively in cliches and banalities.

They aren't all so bad. John Madden had intelligent things to say. And the old MNF team of Don Meredith, Frank Gifford and Howard Cosell could make even a lopsided game worth watching through to its conclusion.

I'm with you on that "I'm not PC" observation. Yes, yes, some people are indeed hypersensitive and seem to be looking for reasons to take offense, but if addressing people in their preferred manner makes me PC, well, then I'm PC.

Every summer that passes, I miss Ned Martin and his literate coverage of the Red Sox all the more. We had dignified, intelligent announcers who could work quotes from Hemingway, Thackeray, and Chaucer into a typical broadcast -- and now we have a clown show. Of course, we also now have a clown team to go with it, so I guess we don't deserve much better.

I was just thinking of Cosell today -- for the first time in a very long time. For someone who was absolutely impossible to avoid in the sixties and seventies, how completely he's disappeared from our national memory. A lesson there to the ESPN jackasses of today.

Maybe Warhol was right.

Much as I hate to acknowledge it, I fear that Marshall McLuhan may have been right, too. The species is showing signs of "retribalizing," and it's due mostly (almost entirely) to electronic media.

The Seattle Mariners had a very good broadcast team when Dave Niehaus (RIP) and Ken Levine were behind the mic. The teams weren't always the greatest, but those guys kept things interesting.

I’ve said before & I’ll say it again...

I miss the commentating as presented by GB announcers in the coverage of the Wimbledon Championships.
They made me feel like they knew that I had knowledge of the sport , not much talking on their part & only at certain intervals.
Class Act !

Hanley Ramirez in left field has Ted Williams rolling over in his cryogenic canister.

I think the outrage was at the implication that she was a gold digger, only interested in his money. Women tend to get a little testy at that suggestion these days.

HH, I don't think so considering how long they've been together and other factors too lengthy to list. I think it had more to do with those who viewed it as a sexist comment. Woman's place in the kitchen and all that.

I worked for a newspaper for a few years in the late 80s and I can tell you that all sports writers and commentators share two things in common:
  • They all think they're hilarious
  • None of them really are

I've never been impressed with sportscasters at all.
What I find offensive are people who use the excuse "Hey, I'm not PC" as an all-purpose excuse for being an a**hole.
That whole, "I am what I am" (usually, "That's just how I am") nonsense only ever worked for Popeye. I had a run-in with someone like that a while back. The details aren't relevant, but he said something about my wife and used that as an excuse. I replied by picking up a 2X2 board, adjusting it in my hands like a bat and calmly saying, "Fine, then I am who I am and I'm giving you 5 seconds to sincerely apologize before I beat the living [F] out of you." Everyone who knew me started getting back as fast as they could, one of them falling over his chair to get out of the way. I think that scared him more than anything because he didn't know me well but realized if they were getting out of the way, there had to be a reason.
He apologized.
I put the board down and said, "And don't ever say something like that again. To anyone."

What is it with people and mircobrews? People have to brag about all the odd brands they've had, especially when you won't have a clue of the names as they're from some other area.
Beer is nothing special for me at all, especially American beers. I do admit I sometimes like to down a bottle of Grolsch from time to time, but it's more to remind of my time in Holland than for the taste. Beer, generally, is not worth the water they put into it to me.
I think it's another pretentious thing for people to brag about. But I still don't get it. I routinely tell people who start that nonsense, "I really don't like beer and am not impressed with whatever odd label you've had," and that has NEVER worked to shut people up. People of their ilk (I hate ilk) don't even hear you saying that, it seems.
I'm not into wine either and I think these microbrew fans are a lot like wine snobs. And none of them understand that the rest of us don't care at all.

^^p51 :eusa_clap, a man after my own heart. Visit the "what did you drink last night" thread for some of the commentary on beer drinking. I do drink beer but do not get all the "craft" beer bs, nor do I care.

-edit- referenced wrong op

Yeah, but that's not unique to beer or wine. It could be coffee or art or sports or airplanes or music or leather jackets. There's a 90% chance that the person you're talking to doesn't give a rat's @ss and thinks you're a pretentious blowhard. That's just human nature.

Fair enough, but generally, I've seen that people will normally start brag about, say, sports and the stadiums they've been to. Person two says they hate sports and couldn't care less. And the first person, often, will shut up or change the subject.
Micro brew people don't even hear you tell them you couldn't care less. To them, it's only pause they have to wait through before continuing on about finding a bottle of "Smedlap Stout" at a beer and wine store in Montana...
I've never experienced this with fans of anything else. Most people, when told you don't care, might be ticked but they won't ignore that you'd even said it and go on like you care anyway...
