We now have several craft breweries here and an annual festival that's attended by craft brewers from a all over the country. We also have more engineers per capita here than just about any other city in the country, and some of those engineers have opened up one of the microbreweries. Not to denigrate any engineers but they can sometimes go a little long when they get in depth about the minutiae of everyday life or the things that make it work. The old, "give me the time, not clock building instruction" thing. Around here there seems to be a confluence of the two. I run into too many of the craft beer drinkers that try to "sell" me on why I should be drinking a particular beer, talking about nuance and subtleties and undertones, and look down on me as if I'm a lesser being when I say I've tried it and don't like it. When I tell tell them I drink PBR, they usually run quickly away.

When someone starts expounding the virtues of any particular craft beer/wine/cocktail, they **** well better be handing me one at the time.

Comments from TV sportscasters are generally so universally stupid that I don't see any point of being offended by them. What I find offensive are people who use the excuse "Hey, I'm not PC" as an all-purpose excuse for being an a**hole.

I am getting tired of that whole "Hey, I'm not PC" thing also! I hate when they look at me and say something like, "remember the good old days when no one was PC?" Most of them were not even born then. I have started to reply, we were PC back then to, we just called it "good manners!"

Yeah, but that's not unique to beer or wine. It could be coffee or art or sports or airplanes or music or leather jackets. There's a 90% chance that the person you're talking to doesn't give a rat's @ss and thinks you're a pretentious blowhard. That's just human nature.

It works with anything they're into. I worked a seasonal job with a guy that had been a roadie with some band. I knew enough to know that the band was really big, wasn't really familiar with their music (wouldn't know enough to name any of their songs). I tried to be polite, but he was ticked that I was not impressed. Why he cared what I--a virtual stranger--thought, I'll never know. And then he proceeded the whole holiday season to complain about everything I did, even to the point of rallying the other team members against me. In a temporary job. I was there to work, but they were there to re-enact the high school hierarchy, apparently. Some of these people were in their 50s, by the way.

And I still can't recall the name of the band because I don't. care.

Music seems to bring out the worst of this in people sometimes. It's like a contest to see who can name the most obscure band out there and then proceed to give a dissertation on why they're so good that no one has ever heard of them.

Pedantic types are everywhere.

It's a human tendency, I suppose, to want people to know that you know something. And that's often just fine, provided what is being imparted is of some interest to the listeners. It becomes annoying when the poor listeners have heard more than they care to, or when the pedant uses up all the oxygen in the room, or when he or she knows more than he or she actually knows.

People get to thinking that their knowledge means something other than what it actually does mean. They become so accustomed to seeing things exclusively through a particular lens (one of their own creation) that they lose sight of other ways of seeing.

That and I think we all like discussing our own interests. We get excited about discussing them. The trick is to know when the other person isn't, and far too often we just end up babbling. We're all guilty of that.

My best friend does it all the time. I just say "Uh huh...." It's geeky science stuff. I have no idea what he's talking about, but I bear with him because he's my friend.

Someone that I’ve known for a long time tried to explain “reverse mortgage” & the way it worked.

After a while, I gave the impression that I understood, although I had no clue. But I didn’t want my
friend to be upset because I didn’t “get it” right away.

I wonder if I did right !

I consider someone to be a friend that will listen if I have questions or issues & not pass judgement
right away but will tell me what they feel is right because they care.

That's a very good way of putting those types!
My wife and I work for the same company and it drives me out of my mind when she starts talking about work to non-employees in a way that only anyone working there would know. She uses company terms and acronyms. I keep telling her in front of them, "He/she doesn't know what XY&Z means!" but it never has any effect. She utterly refuses to acknowledge she's doing it, too.
Any time I talk with anyone, I try to be aware of the context. I do living history events for WW2 subjects, and I always explain the uniforms, equipment, vehicles and weapons in a modern context, otherwise I'm wasting everyone's time. Lots of other guys in the hobby don't do that at all.

As your profile says Alabama, I'm assuming you mean the Huntsville area?

p51, yes the Rocket City, and in regards to your paragraph about your wife, my missus works for NASA and she does the same thing. Mostly to me because I'm clueless but she'll start with all the acronyms to an outsider and my eyes glaze over and my head nearly explodes but she doesn't get it. Twent five years in LE and it would be like me speaking in 10 codes all the time.

Though I suspect that some people deliberately use the jargon of their profession or niche interest to keep others away. They hope that the other person will get confused and go off and bend someone else's ear. It's their way of saying 'I'd much rather be around my own kind.'

Ah, I've been there a few times to hit the adult version of Space Camp a few times now. I'm also a public speaker for the program where I live. Click here if you're interested in seeing more.

In some cases, I'd agree. But my wife has this odd habit of thinking whatever she likes, knows and feels, everyone else should be the same and if they're not, then they've got a problem of some sort. Her whole family is like that, "If you don't think like we do, then you're obviously wrong."

V. C., now I'm getting nervous. So when she comes home tonight and starts with the language I don't understand, I should be looking for a new landing spot.

p51, gave your attachment a quick look. Very cool. Will look at it further later on. Maybe see you up this way sometimes.
I've gone there three times, from 2012 to last October. Won't make it this year which really ticks me off (they brought back the week-long adult session for the first time in many years, and one team will have Astronaut "Hoot" Gibson as an advisor) but I fully plan to get back there in 2016...
