Snuff anyone?

I was inspired by a very interesting conversation I had with Daisy Buchanan this past weekend and wanted to post this picture.
It is a Asian snuff style bottle painted from the inside. It is not an antique but something I picked up in Chinatown a few years ago.

Does anyone have anything similar to show off?

Wow, that is so cool! Thanks for starting a thread like this. I don't have any "snuff distributor" but I've got plenty of snuff, completely an accident in ordering, I swear!! I'll be keeping my eye out for some sort of a snuff box, the one I have isn't all that great. Once I find one, I'll definitely post it.

OK, by "snuff," we're talking the little finely ground tobacco in various blends and flavors which is taken into the nose?

I'd LOVE to see some antique snuff boxes. I recently read a biography of Beau Brummell and the subject came up often.

I don't know when they started calling chewing tobacco "snuff" but I don't like it.

I've never tried snuff, I sneeze enough as it is. lol

It's a big, though all too common, misunderstanding. You don't take snuff in order to sneeze - sneezing powder is something completely different.

There are in fact some sorts of snuff that might effect a sneeze on the beginner, like English "high toasts", which are much dryer and ground more finely than German snuff, but the solution is very easy: Snuff slowly, and not too much at a time.

Snuff has a very pleasant effect on the nose, even if it isn't flavoured with menthol or eucalyptus oils - that's what tobacco was originally used for in Europe, a kind of natural nose drops.

Powered snuff was snorted in Europe. Americans, especially keen on divorcing themselves from the "old countries," began "dipping snuff." at first they'd take a twig, moisten it in their mouths and "dip" it into the snuff container and put it under their lip. As one became more addicted he would take a greater amount and dump it under the lip.

W.E. Garrett beagn marketing dry snuff in the 1800s I guess and it has remained the top seller. Moist snuff- Copenhagen, Skoal and such are different snuffs in cut and flavor but placement of same under the lip is the accepted use method.

Yeah I spent many years in the tobacco industry....

Personally I love snuff. It's sniffed gently into the nose, not snorted, and comes in a wide variety of subtly (and some not-so-subtly) scented varieties (the classic SP is my favourite). Unlike smoking, good snuff a very pleasant experience in its own right (I think smoking must be the ultimate acquired taste) and is much less dangerous because it is never ignited and never reaches the lungs, and it can be used anywhere.

Hehe. It's not supposed to go as far as the sinuses. Properly, you should blow it out, generally shortly after taking some. One of the main disadvantages of snufftaking is that one runs through hankies at an accelerated rate.

I think the bottles have spoons built into the stopper. Mine does not but I have seen those that do.

Or you hold it to the side, maybe even upside down, and pour some out on the back of your hand, if necessary with some gentle tapping of your finger like when you season food.
