Good morning. I was outside this morning wearing a Vtg. Stetson Whippet that re-located from Buler's house to my house. It was introduced on the Whippet thread showing the unique brim stitching (top ribbon has more width than bottom).

I wanted to my share "Side By Side" hat observations with a couple other Whippets.

Brown is not brown. A milk chocolate brown with a distinctly olive ribbon and brim trim is compared with a dark brown, thicker napped hat trimmed with a dark brown ribbon. The darker ribbon has a sheen or shine to it. It also has a smoother lie against the hat. Their is an obvious difference in materials or treatment to the ribbon. The ribbons, as compared to the underside have not changed color very much as they have aged. As far as I can tell, the ribbons are mostly as they were produced. IMO, the ribbons, while different, are grand.

Brim edges differ. The brown Whippets show the top brim edge as being larger than the bottom. The dark drown Whippets brim edge thread contrasts more and really shows up when viewing from under neath the hat. The milk chocolate brown shows under close scrutiny. Both brims are 2.5" and have similar "snap."

Now for something different. Stetson has made the Whippet model for around 80 years. In the fifties, they made the gray one shown in my pics below. The brim is 2.75" and has a brim edge that is the same width on top as bottom. The ribbon is similar dimensions as my other brown Whippets. Interestingly the ribbon know on the gray one is different. ?? A Whippet by label and name. I unfortunately did not take close-ups of the knots, but the pics still show that they are different.

Hi Mike, I had thought to write back with the opinion that felted edges from Borsalino were a later addition, but from a hat I saw earlier today I now know I would have been wrong. When they first began to use a felted edge is a mystery to me it does show up shortly after they resumed production after WWII. I'd love to see the manufacturing label in your felted edge Gorasgu. The hat too, of course.

Alan although I sadly no longer own the hat (it is still close by and accessible fortunately) I do still have pics. Also, since it was OPS tagged easy to date as post war
