These three hats share much in common. They are long hair velours with a fine fur finish - a high end offering at their time of sale, which was somewhere in the 1920s - 1930s. From left to right, a European Flechet, camel color (in mint condition), a black Crofut & Knapp that has lost its original liner and a golden Stetson Clear Nutria Quality.

Left Royal Stetson Stratoliner Post WW2-early 50's
Right Stetson Premier Stratoliner early 40's

All match dimensionally. Felt of the Bantam and Premier match--very thin and light and unlined. Later Strat is medium weight but looks the same as far as finishing and it has the liner

Stratoliner Comparision

I tried to do this last evening but I kept getting bumped off, very frustrating. Anyway, here are three Stratoliners which I believe to be from different eras. I think the grey is from the 20s, the maroon from the 30s and the olive from the 40s. I could be wrong on all accounts so I appreciate any input as far as pining down a date when the hats were made. I was surprised that the Statoliner would go back that far. Here are the hats from oldest to newest.

Hat #1. 2" raw edge brim, 5 1/2" open crown, 1 3/4 grosgrain ribbon, unreeded sweatband, appears to have had a stitched seam with felt backing where it was glued to the crown. The gold stamp on the sweatband says John B. Stetson with Stratoliner below it.

Hat #2. 2 3/4" brim w/grosgrain trim and 5 1/2" open crown, unreeded and deeply stamped sweatband, no liner.

I'm sure there are plenty of Strat experts out there who can pin down a date on these hats. The only stickers behind the sweatbands are the ones shown in the photos. I assume any other identifying stickers such as union labels have fallen off over the years.

Stetson didn't use the union to my knowledge so you won't find those labels. A nice trio of strats which appear to be 30's,40's and maybe even 50's

No pre 40's Stratoliners exist--the airplane and hat were introduced at the beginning of that decade( other than by an earlier model name). First use of name by Stetson April of 1940. The sweat has a double embossing and no other Stetson markings so parts are from multiple hats/makers. Either a 40's 50-'s hat with changed liner, brim trim and new ribbon or something else altogether.
