What a coincidence! My wife made a friend a similar waistcoat just before Christmas. I was so taken with it that she offered to make me one too, but was unable to start on it until after the Christmas/New Year holidays. She finished it last night. When I saw your lovely waistcoat, I did a double take.

Hi folks,
I thought I would post to this older thread rather than starting a new thread and creating clutter.
I really like cw3pa’s vest (see above) and would like to acquire a similar vest. I am looking for old-timey style, wool, something heavier than a suit vest but thin and fitted enough to wear under a jacket, me being 6’2” between 175-180# depending on the season.
For new I am seeing Filson and Schaefer....so, what say you, Filson or Schaefer? or is there something else to consider?
Thank you

His vest has a definite western vibe to it (IMO) and looks a lot like a Filson. A search for western style wool vests will pull up some different makers along with the two you mentioned. Another maker I've been looking at recently is Cattle Kate.

I have two Wyoming Traders wool vests that I really like. They are 22-oz. wool and a little thick, but if you want a snug fit they could still be worn under a coat. They are well made. Worth a look, and a LOT cheaper than Filson:

Good luck,

Aero Leather has some very nice Harris Tweed vests on their "Aero Clothing" page that I'm considering for a (much deserved) Christmas present to myself. They're in a 1930's style and can be bought with matching trousers. Also, Orvis just came out with a very nice-looking dark olive-green corduroy vest that's currently tugging at my heartstrings. Good luck and all the best.

Thanks again, guys, and just to follow up:
At Christmas I opened a box from my daughter and low-and-behold, there was a lovely Filson Western Vest in charcol color in the box. This kid is amazing. I have no idea how she knew I was looking for a wool vest with lapels, perhaps she over heard something, but she loves giving people the most thoughtful gifts. She also gave me a Gordon Parks photo book based on scenes from the Ralph Ellison novel, “Invisible Man”, which is both of ours favorite novel. Last year it was a martini gift basket, the year before a Benchmade folder and Swiss Army Farmer pocket knife. The kid has good taste. Anyway, the Filson vest is really nice, and I probably would not have bought it for myself due to its price, so what a treat. BTW, Amazon is selling the Woolrich Ruxton vest for $39 right now. Cheers, and Happy New Years!

Wow, that is a nice gift indeed! The Filson vests are heavy, warm, and well-made; treat this one right and it will literally last a lifetime. I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of this thoughtful gift!

My new Oxford Bags, (baggy trousers) took a lot of material to make. My missus, who made them, misjudged the amount of material needed, resulting in quite a bit of leftover fabric. So, clever girl that she is, she used that material to great effect and made this fine waistcoat. The attention to detail is incredible, she is a true talent and I am one lucky fellow.

How rude of me, I never did say thank you for your kind compliment, so 27 belated months later, Thank you.

Just like my colourful shirts, my wife has made a number of colourful waistcoats/vests too. The Stars & Stripes was a one off that she made for me when we went to a rather good, July 4th event, at an American airbase. It draw much attention.
