I've been off work poorly for a couple of days and have really gotten into knitting. I know the basic knits and purls, cast on and off and the rest I have figured out with help from mum. I'm so happy I have actually followed a pattern!

This is the pattern, as you can see I have a long way to go!

This is the book to pattern is from. I bought it from a charity shop for £1.50!! I love it so much and would love to be able to make some of the garments from it, I particularly like all of the photographs in it.

And I LOVE the patterned paper which lines the front and back pages.

I've been working my way through volumes 1 and 2 of A Stitch in Time -- both the original (1970s) version of vol. 1 by Jane Waller, as well as the more recent revisions by Susan Crawford. My most recent effort was "It Cannot Fail to Please," which worked out well, but unfortunately turned out too big to fit me. I did get gauge (perfectly, in fact) and I blocked the original gauge swatch like a good little Catholic-school guilt-ridden knitter that I am, but somehow the sweater stretched into a larger size. I think it must have been the high silk content in the yarn.

I think you can get an idea of how big it is by seeing it on a dress form that's roughly a size 6. Too bad. The pattern was perfect -- the mistake was in the knitting or the yarn, I guess. So, the poor thing did after all fail to please, but it wasn't her fault.

I am sorry for intruding the ladies space. I do want to mention i've been crocheting for 5 years, i mostly make beanies, and scarves. I learned by myself to single stitch, and then my mother in law taught me the double stitch. Reason why i am posting is, i'd like to get a sweater made and was wondering if any of you talented ladies would be willing to make one for me, yes i would pay. I love the knits posted. Thanks

Coble, if you can crochet you can knit. This is particularly true if you can get someone to teach you the continental style, which uses a similar hand-hold to crocheting. I say this because there are so many fantastic (and easy) vintage men's knitting patterns out there. Check this out: http://www.fab40s.co.uk/Mens1.html

I think a man's knitted sweater could run you into some money. You'd spend at least $50-75 on decent yarn, even without the labor.

I find knitting so relaxing and enjoyable that I would really like to encourage you to consider taking it up yourself. Once you know the basic stitches, you will easily be able to knit your own sweater; most men's vintage knits aren't that complicated.
