Coble, if you can crochet you can knit. This is particularly true if you can get someone to teach you the continental style, which uses a similar hand-hold to crocheting. I think a man's knitted sweater could run you into some money. You'd spend at least $50-75 on decent yarn, even without the labor.
I find knitting so relaxing and enjoyable that I would really like to encourage you to consider taking it up yourself. Once you know the basic stitches, you will easily be able to knit your own sweater; most men's vintage knits aren't that complicated.
