7-8 months ago, I bought my first tie in 10 years. I had 2 total.

Since then, I've been frequenting the tie section in the Salvation Army locally and this happened:

That's the second layer, I have about 120 total. Mostly Brooks Brothers and better. I have determined I have a few favorite brands. Faconnable ties I've found have been excellent. I don't see a lot about JZ Richards but I like their ties, as well. I have found a dolcepunta 7 fold tie that is fantastic. I lean towards preferring heavy weight silk ties that create substantial knots.

Last night I took a few out. In the first shot, (eight ties) from the left, my first tie purchases (3) for high school in the summer of 1969. As my career progressed, so did my tie-buying choices. The op-art one came after high school; then a classic Countess Mara maroon power tie; another conservative tie; then I bought the tie I wear when I can't decide what tie to wear; then the collector's series tie from Star Wars (never worn).


Some of my granddad's ties... there were more.

My grandfather had bunches of colorful silk ties that were used to make a beautiful quilt. My parents had that quilt for a long time, but I don't know where it is now... I feel sad for that loss, yet glad for you and the care you're giving your grand dad's beautiful ties.

Thanks Dale! I had a serious flamingo issue in the early 1980s. Seemed to dominate our decor for a few years. I had to bring this one home.

As a non tie wearer for 41 years, I don't have the experience with determining vintages. Is there a good primer to identify what is what? As I mentioned earlier, I basically grab thicker or textured ties with colors I like but have no idea what is dated or not.

A lot of vintage ties tend to feel much thinner with less interfacing providing bulk than modern ties.

Sometimes labels do manage to last the test of time which can help. Words for material like "rayon", "Dacron", and "acetate" have fallen out of fashion which can assist in ID. They are also much less likely to have laundry information, country of origin, or multiple language translations.
