The other 'crazy' question for you guys involves recycling or salvaging a stained/damaged vintage tie. a lot of the vintage ties have visible fading/wear/stains on them, which is probably why they make themselves available on the market. But some of the makes look as if it would be fairly easy to convert them into the late 50's early 60's skinny ties, by using the narrow end as the outside, and converting / resewing the fat end to make it narrower than the narrow end.

Most of the narrow ends of ties are in better condition because they are protected and not as exposed to mishaps. I have a couple of ties that would seem candidates for that treatment. I'm gonna try it, but was wondering forum members thought. Am I committing sacrilege?

Yes I'd call it is sacrilege on a high level.
Most stained / damaged ties I've seen can be cleaned and repaired to within approx. 99% of it's original state.
Why screw with a good thing by butchering it?

:arated: I'd rather wear one with some stains than "convert" it.

Sometimes I feel like I could set up as a rag trader with all the 'too large' vintage in my loft, but no, I'm not.

If any of that 'too large' vintage includes suits with a 46/48 inch chest, thirties through to fifties (British), let me know. I'm sure your loft is due for a clearout.

I agree with you there Feraud and Dan'l, but I'm talking about the 1%, only those hard luck cases that have not responded to reasonable attempts at cleaning and repair.

I suppose one should then consider retiring a tie that just doesn't 'get there', but I look at it as an attempt to keep that tie going. Heck, if Fred Astaire can make a belt out of a tie, I don't see the problem with trying to save a hard luck case...

but I understand where you guys are coming from.

Take that 1% and do with what you will! ;)

I am not so sure that is a good idea either:

I recently purchased a batch of 10 ties for $4.50. Here are 9 of them with no visible stains or damage, the 10th one (not shown) is stained, and I'm thinking of experimenting with it - like I mentioned in a previous post above. 2 of them are square cut.

and of the ones that have a label affixed, they are:
Plymouth Hat Shop, Savoy New York, Arrow, Yankee Cravat, Made in California, Eugene Jacobs

and here are 2 others I picked up a month or two ago:
a Wembley "Sama-Fame Rayon of Celanese yarn"

and an old Towncraft Deluxe "individually handpainted"

I, myself, would think that 1940s ties wouldn't be attractive as converted skinny 60s ones. The colors and material would be all wrong. I'm sure it was done in the past when mom changed some of dad's old ties for junior to wear (I've found some that had been shortened). There's plenty of skinny ties out there.

You did well, Tommy!:eusa_clap

None of you guys would wear this, really? I love these ties. I used to find quite a few of them in Goodwills in Indiana. I have one example in several colour variations. This particular one, Quigley is one of the best I've seen! Very, very cool.

Do others agree that these are always exceptionally short? So, maybe for kids? I can wear them easily 'cause my neck's so small and torso so short …

Rummage sale this morning....still in its box. Hand-knitted (I don't think I'd wear, though).

yeah, I've seen a few of those "intact" knit kits.

On a similar subject, quite a few months ago I bought a bag of "printed quarter blocks" of tie patterns, and a bunch of patterns that use the printed blocks. Here're some of 'em. In the bag with them was a length of interlining material and silk-tip end material. The sports ones at the beginning give a good idea of how the pieces of the ties get cut.
