I picked up this odd one from a thrift shop today. I cannot pinpoint the age.

It's almost certainly older than the '30s ... I'd say '20s.

Before the '30s, some of the more expensive neckties (such as yours?) had a strip of satin backing the "inner" side of the tie's narrowest section (the portion of the tie that would be wrapped around your neck).

Why? Because heavily starched detachable turndown collars --the kind commonly used from the late 19th century to the '20s-- tend to "grasp" a necktie as if in a vice, making it difficult for the wearer to slide the tie back and forth in order to tighten it. Adding smooth satin to the tie's band reduced friction between tie and collar, and helped to protect the tie band's own fabric from fraying due to friction.

There! Now you know.

... or maybe not. Extra-length ties, though uncommon, did exist in the '20s. They were marketed to taller men.

I saw your post after I did mine. Interesting. Same ideas. :p
That is true about the extra length ties. They were marketed to taller men and rotund men. :p That would explain it for sure.
I have some ties from the teens that are knits. They definitely needed to be lined on the back side or tying and adjusting them would have been impossible. :p

Excellent input gentlemen; thanks. I've never seen a tie like it with the satin backing at the neck, and I couldn't find anything about the manufacturer. For my own knowledge, what are common lengths for ties of the 20s?

I tested a very small area at the neck to see if the tie will suffer a Woolrite wash, but the blue dissolved with a single drop, so it looks like this relic will just be worn with the pride of its previous wearers' memories.

Although I seldom wear it, I love the pattern on this tie. It has lost the label, so I have no idea of its maker.

Here is another American tie that I picked up on a trip to Toronto recently:

I might as well post some more of my favourites:

I adore the patterns printed on these suede ties. They have no labels and so I have no idea of their age or origin. Any ideas? I recall being given a very similar tie as a present in the 1970s. That came from Spain.

Here are some more. Being British, my favourite ties are by Tootal:

The tie on the left came with its original label. It had been wrongly constucted/pressed. However the mishaped point is fine when hidden beneath a waistcoat.

These don't get worn very often since they are slightly later and narrower than the usual Tootal ties. However, they cost 50p each, so I can have no complaints.

Some nice subtle blues:

Not forgetting the old favourites, paisley and polkadots:

I am on a bit of a roll here:

Good old, simply styled British 1940s ties:

I have no idea of the age or manufacture of these, but they are both perfect with a nice grey suit:

The colours on this are perfect for a day out in the Scottish Highlands in autumn:

Two more simply styles vintage ties. The one on the right is by 'Hope Brothers' of London:

I love the detail on this:

The design of the cogs seems unusual, as if it was made for an enginerring company!

Wow, those are wild. What are the widths and lengths?

Left to right:
3 inches wide - 48 inches long
3.5 inches wide - 52 inches long (certainly the longest tie I own)
3.5 inches wide - 44 inches long.
They are great ties but one has to be careful not to tie them overtight. Tight knots and prolonged use wears away the pattern and wrecks the tie. That's why I'm glad I have three of them!
