here's a couple of British Edwardian very short ties. here the front is shorter but we can't know if that was his doing or the tie was made to be knotted like that.
i suspect the former:

a very short one, but still with longer front:

here's a shot of the above tie being worn. i forgot to mention in previous post that when tied (with the narrow neck-band area in correct place) it ends up with the front shorter than the back.

so what gives ? is it a boy's tie ? made to be worn only beneath a V-neck jumper ? an unusual Edwardian sports style that died out ?

I thought I'd seen something similar somewhere. These are from a book 'Menswear' by Tom Philips. I'm sure someone else around here has got this book too. Anyway, I reckon these are all pre1914.

Some of these seem similar, but I can't see that any are knitted like that.
I wouldn't say yours was a boys tie - even they are longer than that! Would it tie as a bow tie? I'm not saying that's what it is, just that it might look nice that way.
Nice shirt, by the way.

Eddie, those are all very short, but none have the front shorter than the back (apart from No. 1 maybe ? hard to tell).
it's the short front that really puzzles me.

wouldn't work as a bow tie, as the sides aren't equal length.

only other option is that you don't knot the tie, but simply flip it over once and pin it in place. i've seen that done but somehow don't think this tie was made for that.

I'm sure someone else around here has got this book too

yes... me ! ;)

Thanks Eddie. Yes, the Ike tie is vintage. I've seen this fetch a lot at auction. I was pretty thrilled, to say the least, when I found it in a thrift shop for $2.
I'm not familiar with that book, but I like the pics. Something about the short ties appeals to me, like they project a different, carefree sort of attitude. I especially like the way the gent in the third photo is using a tie clip to hold down the tip end of his shorty. And they make me want to grow a moustache. :)

Bob, thanks. I apparently have a 'problem' - at least according to the Mrs.

HBK - I like it like that, as I said, it has a very carefree vibe about. To h#ll with sartorial propriety! Let's have some cocktails. :D

Here are some of my fall/ winter wool ties. All from 20s-40s cleaveland area/New England. Quite a few handblocked English. All around 52 inches. I wear them under vests, because I'm 6'3".

Nice ones Leafandarrow. I'm also 6'3" so I know the boat you're in. It's rarely cool enough down here for a vest, so I just wear 'em short, or occasionally tie them with the back blade reeeeeally short and tuck it in my shirt. I've found, though, that the louder the tie, the less people notice the length.

The fox head ties are cool.

The feather tie was from a flea-market 1/2 price booth (paid $2.25). The floral from the DAV thrift (paid 49 cents). It was in the kid's section.

Fashion Craft Cravats for Hart Larsen's, Eugene, Oregon. 51" x 4". Nylonized (acetate and nylon), resilient construction.

The blue floral tie has no tags and appears to be linen. 51" x 2-1/2".

Not a tie there that I don't adore leafandarrow! Very very VERY nice collection. I especially like that blue one. Just brilliant.

Really nice BobHufford. Concur with the others, the feather one is pretty smashing.

Is it from his presidential campaign then presumably? Or from after he was elected?

And I see what you mean about the shorty ties. They do look pretty care free, and presumably are short for the sake of not flapping in your face when you're playing lawn tennis or whatever.

Eddie....yes, from the campaign. Presumably from his first run in '52, hence the pic of him in his military uniform. A lucky find. I studied history in college, with an emphasis on post-reconstruction American history, so I really go in for this sort of stuff. (Probably also why I earn a living as a plumber.)

I don't reckon any of these gents are gonna be playing any lawn tennis, but they are rockin' the shorties.

Not as short, but a couple of these cats are sporting them as well.

Very cool Dale. And sounds as if you're studies were pretty interesting! I did a module on 20thC American history - really fascinating. That's a great piece of US history to wear around your neck - not many folks can boast that!

Gotta love those guys with the shorty ties!
