Okay, I've shown this before (I think...), but I like the way it goes with today's shirt and suit. Metcalf Cravats, sold by the Bostonian ("Reliable Clothing since 1885"). Likely acetate, c.mid-'50s, no lining.

Gee, why wasn't I thinking of that before? Until now I only pondered the idea of finding James Stewarts' wardrobe at one of the local flea markets...

Ha! The waists were like 29", with no more than 1 1/2" left. The inseams were also short, and with little left over. Not good for me at 33/33 (high waisted trousers). They also have a beautiful, robin's egg blue, window-pan, semi atomic-flecked sport coat which is marked 40 but is more like a 38. It was fully-lined, so I couldn't see how much material is left over. For $25, it would be "a steal."

Oh my. I've danced to that tune so many times I could step it out while being sound asleep...

Whenever I find a nice vintage (German) suit in one of the local thrift stores here in Berlin (which happens every now and then) it's always the pants that wreck my hopes...and wreck they do! [huh]

The jackets sometimes fit but I just can't bring myself to seperate a suit. A few days ago I was at a place here in Berlin that sells large quantums of vintage clothing and they had this extremely beautiful 30's German suit in medium gray with belted-back jacket. The jacket fit perfectly but the pants were way too short... That would have been one of my holy grails!

Anyway. Back to topic.

I got these in the post yesterday. They are British, woolen ties, made in the 1950s. They are part of a box of deadstock ties found in the original factory and which are now available from 'Darcy Clothing' in Lewes, East Sussex.

^^They remind me of the South-West American Indian-made ties from that period. Good find!

Two recent finds. No labels, both c.mid-'50s; one on left feels like silk, other one likely acetate/rayon.

It may be hard to see, but tie on the left has violin/bow and ballet dancer motifs.

I'm going to ask a question that has probably already been answered somewhere on this forum, but I have yet to find it through the search function and scouring threads.

Is there a method of tying the older (shorter length) ties in such fashion as to bury/hide the tail end?

Getting the older ties close to the proper length on me leave 2-4 inches in the tail, and it is hard to keep that hidden and/or controlled behind the main length. Any suggestions?

It is tough but a vest or sticking the end in your shirt may work.

You can also use an appropriate tie bar and wear it towards the top. Hang 'em high!

an alternative solution may be a very small protective tack, safety pin, or similar device, something natural, attaching the tail and head between the two, but hidden from view... I'll have to think through that idea some more.

I sometimes use a safety pin to attach the short tail to the back of the tie. You can conceal the 'pin in the folds of the tail.
