Aren't there professional book-restoration services out there that will restitch books for you?

I'm sure there are, but since there aren't any places even remotely around me that means I'd be forced to mail the poor thing off to whoever does it, and the process wouldn't be inexpensive either I'm sure.

For all that I think it'll just be safer if I shrink wrap it or seal it up in some way and make sure I store it properly, at least then the damage won't progress past what's already been done.

Here's pics of the stereo I mentioned the other day.

Today, at my favorite little charity thrift store ...

GEDC0192.jpg

It was priced at 75 bucks. I watched as it languished on the shelf for a few weeks (this shop is a bit off the beaten path, so it doesn't get much traffic). And then they marked it down to 50. Today orange tagged items are 50 percent off, so I got it for 25 bucks.

It works quite well, so, while I know next to nothing about vintage radios, I figure I did okay.

You paid the right price, but get all the capacitors replaced or else you risk blowing your output transformer (i.e. no sound!).

Tom you got that for 4 bucks???????
Holy cow!
My grandmother had one similar to that, and it sounded awesome.
Sadly she gave it to someone before she died!
I have no idea who it was...

Replacing capacitors isn't too tough at all. Simple soldering job.

OK.

Is this capacitor replacement a job for a know-nothing such as myself? Or ought it be entrusted to an experienced person?

Thank you very much! I love it!
AtomicEraTom,

Major cool!

Gotta love Goodwill, they had another one there, and I when I went back, it was gone. The told me they threw it out, because it didn't work. I told them to not do that again, if they're gonna toss it, let me know, I'll come pick it up, I repair them. People give me stuff like this all the time, because it's broke. Usually I can have it fixed that day.

Good eye! I've got a few 500's like that in green. Love the phone number! I've got a few phones with the alphanumeric numbers still on the dial. The black one in the middle is a local phone, from here in Pardeeville with a dial card reading "42W"

I spy that green phone at the bottom of the china cabinet. We had one exactly like that in the late 50's when our phone number was CE3-3042W ♥

Thanks Tony. It was a little bit rustic. I did some work sanding and repainting and rewiring. I have ordered some vintage wire to finish it off, but with triple digit heat lately I needed it to work asap. Love the old fans.
