Hey. Keeping up with the whole lumping all the maker/ model together threads we have, I thought I'd start a thread showing playboys, and how they changed over the years. I'd appreciate it if everyone with a playboy, no matter the age or styling, post in this thread.

Thanks.

I'll start it off with mine, a first generation, mid '30s one.

I'm going to make an opportunity of this thread, because I have a Playboy in 7 1/4 that I want to sell. Here's a photo - check the classifieds for more shots.

The brim on this one is just a bit too small for me, and I figure someone here will like it a LOT. The felt is wonderful in these.

Jimmy that is truly breathtaking. Every time I see a hat that you have creased I despair at my own ham handed fumbling. You have got it down cold, brother!
D'man; lovely example you began the thread with. Classic in every respect.
Here is my humble entry. It was a size 7 1/8

(I dunno why I got it as I am a solid 7 3/8). I sent it up to Optimo with no instructions other than to size it up.

I think they executed a very nice complementary ribbon treatment and sized it just right.

Regrettably the brim lost 1/4" and now sits at 2 1/4", my stingiest and probably not my most flattering, but what the heck. It is a butter soft Royal Stetson and has the subtle row of stitching along the brim's edge. Someday I would love one with a slightly wider brim tho'...and looking at ya'lls I wonder if the wider ribbon on mine might not be a mistake, I just assumed that, without other instructions, they would replace the ribbon with one of the same width... my mistake.

Rick --

It wasn't until I watched Casablanca on TMC a few weeks ago that I finally understood your true identity, as revealed in your new avatar! :)

Anyway -- I really like the color of your Playboy. It's just beautiful. I think the refurb job looks great, even if it does have a wider ribbon!

That being said, I've always loved the look of the 1-inch ribbon on the Stetson Playboy. For me, it's one of the things that gives the Playboy its distinctive identity. The bow treatment is really crisp and clean -- very sharp looking. A classic lid, to be sure...

Dang, Jimmy - the ribbon on yours is a dead match for the one on mine. I think the colors match pretty well, too. But it appears the Playboy stamp on your sweatband is quite different - mine's the gold style, yours is brownish.

Hey, group: how many of your Playboys have a very subtle, color-matching stitch just inside the edge of the brim? I didn't even see the stitch on mine until I was checking the hat out tonight.

I think JP identified this as early 1950s in the Bermuda Green model but i'm not sure, myself. Mine seems to be a much duller, more sage green.

Rick Blaine: Please tel me that Optimo put on the correct ribbon width. On something as iconic as a Playboy, i'd say that's pretty essential. It looks to me like they've put on far too thick a ribbon . . .

Obviously, this should be known as the Playboy Mansion

Thank you, thank you...I'll be here all week...

Or, as I've previously suggested, perhaps the Playboy Club. After all, these hats are no strangers to bunnies...:D :D :D

But, seriously, ladies and germs... :eusa_doh:

Yup -- looks very similar, Pilgrim. If I remember correctly, I believe that fedoralover may also have one in a very similar color, as well. I think that the gray on gray looks very cool. And yes, these hats do have very subtle stitching along the edge of the brim. When I first got my Playboy, I actually overlooked it at first. Once again, though, a really nice detail that is certainly distinctive.

Baron Kurtz -- great color on that Playboy!!! I would agree, it doesn't seem to be the "Bermuda Green" -- but a really nice, unique color, nonetheless!

Thanks Jimmy. It was on a hat rack next to a Stratoliner in the same colour and a Whippet. All from the same store for the same guy back in the day. All $15 each when i bought 'em.

Now THAT'S a good hat day...!!!:)

Cheers,
