Oxfords or brogues? The avatar is of me after a car accident. It's a reminder for me that life is unpredictable and I should enjoy it as much as I can.

Hey dog20. I remember you posted about the accident and trying to buy new clothes some time ago. It's good to see you recovered and are back in the game now.

I think a pair of plain black oxfords would be the most versatile. No perforation and fancy stuff. They are very elegant as well as kinda understated. But think about it this wa: You don't even need advice. Just buy the shoes you like and enjoy them.

Thanks floey, I'm thinking about buying a pair of shoes at a men's fashion place ("The warehouse for men" or "Dillards" here in the US). For the rest of my outfit, I'm going to buy from thrift stores. I'm currently reading Russell Smith's "Men's Style" and I'm learning a lot from it. I've been taking a lot of notes from the book.

Just won these. Dr. Scholl's Copeg. Looks like they made them from the early '50s through early '60s.

By the way, the term "brogue" refers to the holes that are sometimes punched in the leather, often at the edges. I suppose the "opposite" of Oxfords would be Bluchers. It's the treatment of the leather around the lace holes. If it is sewn underneath the rest of the uppers, it's Oxford. If sewn on top, Blucher...

I suggest one of each. Oxfords are often more dressy, as Bluchers are often labeled more "casual".
