That has to do with how the shoe fits your foot. We all have different feet. Some shoes will fit your feet better. If a shoe fits one person well, it may not fit the next person the same.

Speaking of shoes that fit oddly, these are my Allen Edmonds Randolph loafers and after wearing them briefly on Wednesday I got such a terrible blister on the top of my foot behind my big toe (odd location!) that I'm considering selling them. Does anyone know how I could try to break them in/remedy this weird fit problem? My right foot was totally fine!

Yes every item of footwear can be a world of its own but my experience is English tend to do a narrow heel and wider front foot. I am a 12uk G fitting. German shoes tend to wide everywhere while Italian are narrow every where. Yes generalisations but one many I have spoken in Australia have found. A major Italian maker of bushwalking boot only imports to order their standard Italian fit and supplies a wider boot which frequently is complained about as too narrow as standard. As kids a lot of us grew up barefooted until in our teens. I used to hate shoes at that age, oh how that wheel has turned now.

On the weird fit you can get shoe stretchers that have adjustable bumps. Worthwhile if you strike this problem frequently but if a one off likely just a last that does not like you. Leather does stretch and shape but it is trade-off on pain versus love of the shoe.

Cheers
