I've been looking for a good cobbler because Timpson's just don't do a great job in my opinion and I don't want to trust them with my vintage shoes... independent cobblers seem very hard to find though!

I bring all my shoes to Timpson's here in Dublin and they always do a great job (and the 15% discount comes in very handy). I used to bring my shoes to a specialist cobbler (who mostly works with designer shoes) but I felt I was being completely ripped off - bonkers money for tiny heels etc. - the people in Timpson's did the very same job for a significantly smaller fee.

I do hope you find someone who can do a good job on your shoes - and of course, for the right price!

I think perhaps it depends on the thickness of the original sole. I have a pair of 40's shoes and the soles are a much thicker and more robust leather than my modern leather soled equivalents. The leather on the uppers is much heavier than anything today too, they have held their shape superbly, whereas my modern ones have stretched like mad!

The advice I was given years ago is maybe more related to shoes with a lighter sole. I have certainly seen damage caused by soles that are way too heavy for the uppers.

ETA: they just won silver in the European Cobbler Championship so how bad can they be?

Lovely purchases everyone! I actually haven't bought very much vintage lately, for some reason I have felt rather uninspired or been unable to afford what I did find.
However, I am thrilled that I just won this skirt by Henry Rosenfeld, especially since I came upon a picture from a 1955 Life magazine with the same skirt in it!

I also got this J Crew skirt

and it reminds me of this Horrockses skirt:

This is a soft denim type skirt for every day wear

Lastly, I finally managed to find this Laura Ashley dress from a few years ago in blue in my size, and for good measure got the same one in red from this season.

Can a guy post to this thread or is it just a gal thing? Last November my wife and I were invited to a wedding in Manhattan that I knew was going to be attended by wealthy elites(which we are not) and given that I could not afford to buy my wife "couture" I set out to do what I do best...find gems on ebay. I put together an ensemble for her that we both loved and I think made her the most fashionable woman there(yes I'm biased, but she really looked great) It was a lot of fun for me and a learning experience, how many guys do you know that actually knows what a "crinoline" is(rephrase: straight guys). Anyway, I'm fishing for a compliment from the ladies...did I do good?

Thank you Lindabelle, it arrived yesterday and it is in such good condition, too. I have since learned that the one in Life magazine is actually a dress with a yellow midriff. I'm trying to find out which issue of Life it is so that I can buy it as well when I find it.

Bought myself this great 1930s linen sportswear dress, partly because I absolutely love a bit of 30s linen, and partly because I have a new job, and I wanted to treat myself. I will be able to swop the belt and shoulder ties for different colours too, which I like. It has the coolest early plastic eyelets! Swoon!

Beautiful skirt Drappa - very unusual fabric - so glad it arrived and is in wonderful condition. The Laura Ashley dresses are so pretty - sadly you can't get Laura Ashley clothing in Dublin anymore (their stores only sell furniture - not that I mind that at all!) - I've always loved their range plus they do a mean sale!

Weirdly enough they don't ship to Ireland (M&S only started shipping to Ireland a couple of weeks ago!) - once one of their main shops on Grafton St. closed that was the end of their clothing range here. A couple of weeks later I saw this gorgeous Laura Ashley dress in a magazine - navy with vintage postcards on it and full skirt - and there was no way to get it - I'm still thinking about it!
