Ok so I've been thinking of getting a pair of these from the internet but being very lucky I found these at a thrift store

They are pretty old looking, almost antique. I don't really have any idea how old these are. They look self made, but the buckle system is not something thats easy to craft yourself.

Judging from the hooks (bakelite and metal) I'd throw a wild guess of 1920's to 1940's.

Someone with a lot more knowledge please come forth!

Mens garters! Woohoo! Spandex (invented 1959) made these babies obsolete. Before that (maybe in the 1930's?) there was regular elastic, which I believe was woven into the tops of some socks, but had a rather tournequit effect on the leg. My father wore them every day to work when I was very small. If you didn't wear garters, your (non elasticized) socks stood a very good chance of drooping down and into the toe of your shoe. I suspect that wearing a pair with modern Spandex woven socks might not be comfortable, and would also be unnecessary. But they were definitely almost universal. Think of every scene from an old movie of a man with no trousers. Always those garters.

I definitely remember my dad wearing them when I was a kid. He wore them with work boots, which tend to pull non-elasticized socks down into a wad right in front of the heel. They do the same thing today with socks having worn-out elastic. To bad I didn't save my dad's sock-garters ...

And that is exactly why I still wear them today. The "elastic," "spandex" or whatever it is dies a quick death and then the garters take over---unless you buy new socks every month or so.
