It is. Coincidentally, the Eccleston ones were my favorite. Leather jackets make everything better though I didn't even took any notice of it at the time...

Yeah I preferred the Eccelston ones too. I was struck by the Doctor's look because it was pretty much how I dress. All black, battered leather coat and a v-neck sweater.

Thanks for posting that old German coat and mentioning it was worn in that tv series. Wested makes a copy which might work well for me.

Thanks also to whoever posted the old Bates. Can you imagine the skill required to assemble all those pieces of coloured leather? Amazing!

The Bates is mine! I'm the second owner. The original owner wore it in dirt bike/motocross races in the 60's and 70's. A very interesting guy who shared his history when I purchased the jacket. It really is quite remarkable. The jacket took an intense beating and is still quite strong. The craftsmanship on that one really is something and I feel like the coolest cat in town when I wear it!

I have some Korean War-era nylon flight jackets that are a bit older, but these are my two oldest leather jackets. The one on the left is a 1962 B-Series Ralph Edwards that I bought for my girlfriend. Sad to say, she doesn't seem to appreciate the beauty and rarity of a B-Series RE as much as most women would...and size 38 is way too small for me...so the jacket is seldom worn. The other one is my 1967 C-Series Star Sportswear, in big-boy size 48.

There is one like that for sale on Ebay right now. With a new lining and the seller uses the picture of an Italian auction to show that his jacket is also a Knopf. Curious thing to see just in 1-2 days 3 of the same jacket in different leathers.

one of my oldest jackets--a 55J14 (AER), probably private purchase back in the late 1940s, early 1950s bore this ID. i say private purchase (PX) because i've not seen any record of Flying Equipment Co., Chicago, of ever having a USN/USMC/USCG contract. this is my personal patch jacket.

Cool tour jacket. Have you ever managed to wear it without getting $%^&ing Top Gun comments? (gah, there are few films I hate as much as that one.... I think I could only hate it more if it had been directed by George Lucas....)

Yeah I preferred the Eccelston ones too. I was struck by the Doctor's look because it was pretty much how I dress. All black, battered leather coat and a v-neck sweater.

It was a clever move to dress him down a bit. They wanted to modernise the Doctor a bit, and also they always try to give each Doctor his own spin on the character in the choice of outfit. The last few Doctors had been quite dandy, so gonig down would have made sense. They would also have remembered the backlash towards Colin Baker's (Doctor Number Six) 'clownsuit', as it became known.... Generally, they've done the Doctor's outfits really well sicne the relaunch. One of my favourites has been what Matt Smith wore towards the end of his tenure - an Edwardian look that was btoh historically correct, and yet almost pure 50s Teddy Boy. They've gone back to a more casual look for Peter Capaldi (who is now, in his final season, getting some decent writing to work with - at last! It's mostly been awful since Moffat took over). It's going to be interesting to see what comes next. I hope it's something a bit more dandified again - it feels time.

I've always had mixed feelings about that sort of mid-length leather, but I'm now coming round to the point of rather fancying one.... An Aero Barnstormer is on my wants list for heavier, Winter weather, but for Spring, 'need something just a touch warmer than a blazer', over the top of a shirt and wasitcoat type wear, I'm really leaning towards experimenting with a Wested Das Boot....

i understand the Top Gun reference. only time i have worn it in the last couple of decades was to a squadron reunion. no Top Gun comments there. :)

31st anniversary of that movie today. I actually like it. It reminds me of being a kid, getting sun burnt after an 8 hour day at the pool and eating hot dogs for dinner.
