Now that is a wood and steel weapon. Very nice wood at that. I won't assume so...when was it made/caliber? Looking at the finish on the hammer, it appears not to be a closet queen.

I built this rifle in 1976,I used blue prints from Jim Bridger's rifle with a few modifications. It's 54 cal.1" in 72" twist.Drives tacks with patched round balls.I have won many mountain man run competitions with this rifle, shot deer, elk, and turkeys and all manner of varmints.

That's amazing work there, exactly what I'm pining for.

But lacking your skills, I've been considering either the Lyman Great Plains or the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken.

Lyman makes what is probably the most accurate reproduction of an original plains rifle, only with a blued barrel. They tend to be good shooters and are reasonably priced. If you are really interested in an accurate reproduction such as the one Michaelshane I suggest you take a look as some of the percussion rifles offered for sale through Track of the Wolf at http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartList.aspx?catID=12&subID=83&styleID=290&PageSize=10&Page=1 There is a beautiful reproduction of Bridgers rifle on their site now.

Here are two of my favorite fire arms. 1870 Springfield Trapdoor carbine in 50-70 and an 1886 Winchester 45-70 made in 1889. The 45-70 is spot on at 200 yards, the 50-70 is worthless at that range. Still, a lot of fun!

Very nice, Stearmen! I love 86's! To me the 86 is the apex of Winchester rifles! The much bragged about Model 70 is just a dandified Mauser. And I love my Mausers! :)

Here's my Grandfather's 8mm Mauser that I inherited. He built the stock and sporterized it for hunting back in the early 50's I believe. It's very pretty in person as the photo doesn't do it justice. My main pistol is my Springfield XD9 Tactical which I love.
