Here is a nice little gem I happened to come across. I picked it up for a very reasonable price. It is a Mk IV Webley dated post war. These were never considered very attactive looking revolvers, in fact I believe they are universally considered "ugly" by everyone except possibly the Tommy's who used them.

I love Webley revolvers, yours is neat, especially the barrel length. Is that the one known as the "tanker" model for use by armored vehicle crews?

It is considered the "duty model" I'm not certain if this is considered soley tanker model, but I do know that it was issued across the armed services so it seems likely.

I dunno about that, DG... sometimes in tools meant for Serious Social Situation use, the more ugly and even evil a gun looks the more formidable its psychological impact is. Some of us call our trusty 1911s "Old Ugly" for good reason... and yet would rather not have any other sidearm when the chips are down.

Sometimes "pretty is as pretty does"... kinda like the A-10 Warthog.

There is nothing ugly about a 1911. They are like a classic locomotive, handsome in an industrial kind of way.

I agree wholeheartedly! Some are even down right beautiful like a prewar commercial - top 1911 in this photo - with a Norinco in the middle (darn good copy of a Colt) and a Clackamas-made Kimber (my modern 1911).

I've got a Kimber Pro Carry CDP and it's a nice gun and relatively easy to carry but I think that I would rather have an honest full size Colt or one like your pre-war.

I have other shotguns and some modern rifles but when I hunt birds or deer these two are my guns of choice.

Here are two photos of my 1911 Colt Commerical - SN C-2273
Fully engraved (Don't know by whom) with Eagle and Snake Mexican MOP Grips
Probably carried on the Mexican Border in the early teens (20th Century)

Wow Draws, that is a wonderful firearm!

Diamondback, I have to agree; I love my .357 "Hogleg" (S&W 686), although it's not very ugly. Sometimes, the ugly guns are the scary ones! I think some of the .50 BMG snipers are kinda ugly, but I bet we'd all agree they're effective when aimed right. ;)

Very nice,draws.
I would guess that the engraving is Mexican. I have a Marlin Mo. 39A among my engraved guns that was done in Mexico...or the southwest by Mexican engravers that is even silver wire inlayed. It is a very similar type of fine intricate engraving and scroll type that Mexican engravers seem to prefer using.

Thanks for sharing the Mexican engraver info. I had guessed as much and know that it wan't Colt engraved. You wouldn't happen to have some reference material for the mexican engravers, would you? Any follow up would be very interresting to say the least. I would love to see some photos of the 39A just to compare some of the egraving details. I will provide several other detailed photos as well .

After Christmas I'll try to get photos of the 39A. I have a couple large safes full of guns..and will need to dig it out! Plus I may have some Mexican engraving literature on file somewhere. Mexican engraving can be quite good..but does have a distinctive style in most cases. Usually a combination of intricate scroll...also with an open flair along borders in almost an Indian or native design.
My 39A has a detailed squirrel engraved in buttstock along with scroll type checkering...and silver spacers..if I remember correctly. I do believe that it was all done near the border..or south of the border.
