And here is a close up of the cross stitch running down the one side....while it was being worked. The loose white strands you see are the waste canvas.

Its a design from a folio published in Kiev in 1923.

I started it in March and finished the week before the QM. It was my handwork project for the summer...in that time I would estimate I spent probably 40 or so hours on it...at the low end of estimation. It's hard to know, because I took it multiple places and worked on it while laundry was washing, at crafting nights at friends houses...etc...all summer.

The piece is about 12 inches long and was done on a ribbon so that I could just tack it to the PJ's when I finally made them.

Aha.

Is that Simplicity 5876?

It looks like it! Nice to see it in real life!

I have the pattern but haven't made it up yet, it looks great!
But I think I will make a narrow belt with a buckle rather than that cummerbund, it would look more 30s (and I can't wear bunchy fabric around my thick waist).

I am planning on making it in black crepe, with the godet ruffles and the sleeves in this wonderful embroidered fabric I have, that is black chiffon encrusted with 2" Walter Rennie Macintosh style roses, in emerald green. I have a lot of green jewelry and no green evening gowns, for some reason.

It would also be swell in an all-over lace, in red, very Spanish.

Yes, that's it. The ruffles take ages - my dear mother hand tacked them all before sewing to get them to sit right. I've seen it made in plain black with lace ruffles but it lost alot of the detail, unfortunately, so I like the idea of a fabric with contrasting bright colour.

I agree that a small belt would be more flattering. I've got a long body so it doesn't matter too much on me, but I might get mother to send me some leftover fabric and make a slim belt too. Since it was a present, I wasn't about to start getting too fussy!

This black beret. 3 pieces, and no they didint match up! I had to cut away some to make it fit, stupid pattern. Its out of a cheap woolish felt. Its a tester, and I plan to make a few more out of better material.

Here are my Camp Hollywood costumes this year.
Friday night was Maquarade night:

I started with a reprinted vintage pattern for the bolero, but the sleeves weren't turning out right, so I drafted them from scratch. I did French seams because the fabric is sheer, but also because I wanted a casing in the sleeve seam. I ran horsehair braid in the seam/casing to make the sleeves stand up.
Rather than hemming/binding the edges, I ran a decorative zig-zaggy stitch at the edges to prevent fraying. Another woman was wearing a vintage gown that night with a similar ruff, and her edges were finished the same way.

My bolero fabric was a border print, so I gathered the edge and tacked it to the skirt hem. I usually make a matching pocket square for +1, and this year he wanted a cummerbund too - I think that was a fab idea he had!

Outfits in action. This photo would be so much cooler if that dude's camera weren't in the way of the shot!:)

Saturday was Western night:

Much less fancy, but still fun. I got lazy and didn't do my hair that night. I made the blouse and skirt a while ago, and added the rest for this event. (those longish "short" sleeves are period correct for the early 40's, but after seeing pics I don't like it. I think I'll shorten them an inch or two.)
I made the waistcincher with scrapbooking brads, turned out to be super easy, only took a couple hours in front of the TV. And the hat was special, tiny so I could wear it while dancing - glued to my headband, I kept it on for the whole first set!

Everyone has been making such lovely, fancy things. I LOVE that 75th anniversary pattern, too. Too pretty.

This is the third version of this dress. I love it so much -- it fits perfectly, looks good, and it's really EASY to make.

Finished! Thanks to all the ladies who helped me along whenever I posted in the sewing FAQ thread! Ignore the belt I'm using - I can't figure out the buckle nonsense, so I think I'm going to look for a a small red one without a prong, and secure it that way.

SO CUTE!!!! I just love it! The style suits you so well! Those darn vintage belt kits are a blessing and a curse in one. Sometimes modern fabric stores carry them, too. Regardless, it looks great to me, and I just love your fabric!

Amy Jeanne, I think this might be one of my favorite things you've made! I just love the nautical feel! I think I just got a patch almost identical for my bathing suit! Great minds...

I love everyone's photos!
Here's the infamous Walkaway Dress. Pardon the wrinkles. I made a number of tweaks to make it fit better.

And a feather fascinator that I threw together last minute for a 20s party.

I made this today. Or rather, remade. I found a red a-line skirt at the thrift store for $5 and really liked the thick wool, so I tore it apart and made a new skirt. This is from a 50s pattern, but I had to shorten it because I didn't have enough fabric in length. I even got to reuse the original waistband and the metal zipper! It was probably originally homemade in the 70s and was really well done, but I put it to pieces to make something more flattering. You can't really see it, but there's four darts in front, four in back, and top stitching on either side of the center front seam.
