How are people doing on their sewing? I need inspiration! I've just ordered a few retro patterns and need summer clothes badly!

I'm a novelty print fanatic, so any tips on working with them for retro sewing?

I've been doing some costuming for old Hollywood movie monster statues and just finished a Wolfman caped trench coat.

I've got five yards of black cashmire that I want to turn into a long coat for my husband.

Over at the Butterick website, a good lot of their patterns are on sale for $2.88 each, including the retro ones, so I've picked three I think will be good for me to start with. Some patterns are so similar, that it seems a waste of money to not just adjust them myself. I think I'll be adding sleeves to two of them, as the ones with the fit and necklines I want are sleeveless. Until I'm in better shape, I just don't like my upper arms bare if I can help it. The dress that I can't add sleeves to, I may make a bolero for. I also can't stand high necklines. I mean literally can't stand them, not that I think they're not attractive. I feel like I'm strangling with even a high jewel neckline. I can't even wear t-shirts that don't have a deep scooped neckline. My mom was the same way...

One of the dresses had a sarong wrapped front, so I think it'd be cute in a tiki print fabric.. I think I may even have enough fabric in a print with Mardi Gras posters for one of the others. I want a Dia De Los Muertos print for the other one. I made a corset in it, and it looked great! I so wish I had enough of the Edgar Allen Poe black and white print fabric I bought last Halloween for a dress.. I've made corsets in that too.

I recently discovered Lutterloh patterns. Oh wow. I should never need to buy a vintage sewing pattern again, as I've acquired copies of their pattern books from the 1930s right through to 2010 all in one fell swoop and all available in my size. I'm missing a few supplements here and there, but there are literally hundreds of patterns that I'm happy to use. Right now I am making a muslin of this dress from 1954. Isn't it gorgeous? Pity my waistline doesn't quite match the drawing

My wife is just about to finish a rather nice, late 1930's, summer outfit. Just the hem to do. She spent hours on the bow, only to decide that it looked: 'To fussy.' so has decided to leave it off. I am loving the dusky pink material, what do think ladies?

The car is a right hand drive Packard, 1939 model. Where do I recognise you from?
Will you be at Hep Cats, Sand Bay, early July? Or War-on-the-Line Alresford next weekend?
Or Twinwood over the August holiday weekend? Pickering in October?

Ahh, I'm a Woman of Mystery, I've always wanted to be one of those GHT!

We live in Chester and so don't get to many of those events at that end of the country (and certainly not in 'Bette' the Big Seven). We do go to lots of events this end though, as, as a family we re-enact, on out own, as part of the 'Northern 40's' group and now as the newly formed 'Chester Home Guard'.
If you are ever up this way you will see us at the East Lancs Railway Wartime Weekend (just gone), Howarth (sometimes), Lytham, the Victory Show, and Crich - where my avatar was taken in a phone box. We were at the ill-fated first Vintage at Goodwood a few years back with our Chap-beflagged tent. We may be at Twinwoods for the first time this year (I have my suspicions it may be a birthday present) We do lots of other events, but to be honest, you may have just seen me around and about as I look like this most of the time.

I used the top of the dress you picked for my second Lutterloh project. I really liked how it came out, and pity that it's too large for me now
(I know the print isn't very vintage, but I love the colors and it was so incredibly cheap that I just couldn't help buying it)

Some of the colours in the dots of your dress hits the colour of that little BMW three wheeled car just fine. Exellent picture.

Since Lutterloh have refused to re-release them for purchase and they are well-nigh impossible to find second-hand in New Zealand (or affordable from foreign sites), paying money for them was not a realistic option for me and some potentially questionable behaviour was required. I went online and searched for "lutterloh pdf torrent" and took it from there. Your results may vary!

This reminds me of the dress that Maureen O'Hara wore in "The Parent Trap"! Beautiful!

Thank you for your comments! I try to imagine people playing twister on my dress (while I'm still wearing it, of course). Not really G-rated, is it?
Of course we picked the car, if that's what you wanna call it (no offence meant, I love this kinda tiny vehicles, but I'm not sure if you really can call it a car ), for the photo. It's an Isetta, btw.

Maybe this year on the same festival, some owner will allow me to sit in one.
Last year, I got the chance to sit in a Messerschmidt Kabinenroller.

She did make a matching bolero to go over her shoulders, I didn't think to photograph it. Here's the lady wearing that dress. We stayed in a beautiful hotel, I used the library as a backdrop.
