Pattern Reviews

Mentioned in another thread, I've been on the Lounge for 3 years now and don't ever recall such a thread so I'll start it!

Post your pattern yeays and nays here! If there is a thread and I missed it, of course, merge it.

I'll start with two, a yeay and a nay...

Yeay for Hollywood 1908! Date stamped 1940 on the back it is very easy to construct and can be done in one day! The skirt is billowy, the midsection is flattering in that it clings to your waist, the bodice is flattering to the bust, and I *adore* the super-pouffy sleeves (personal taste!)

There are only 10 peices and they are all very basic. Nothing about this pattern is difficult and anyone with intermediate sewing knowledge should be able to knock this out in a day or two. I've made it twice so far; one for me and one for a re-enactor friend:

Now here's a pattern that didn't work for me:

The finished product is gorgeous, but I had a problem putting on the strap band and the bodice was HUGE, even though I diliberately made the dress one size smaller than my measurements. The instructions for the straps/band across the top are very vague and I ended up putting it on upside down at first lol The bodice was SO HUGE I had to dart it on the inside side seams, which kinda ruined the soild flow of the band. I always seem to have problems with modern repro patterns, namely Vintage Vogue :(

It's not just you... I find their directions very hard to follow. Still have yet to finish my first project with a vintage pattern, haven't had time to sew... (and waiting for tax returns so I can buy a new sewing machine as mine works half the time!!!)

I just purchased V2961 and now I am worried. I plan to make a muslin and I am using the straps. I bought some Jaquard ribbon as I am trying too copy a dress I saw in a Debbie Reynolds move. Wish me luck.

Here's my latest that I just cranked out this week and I must confess that there is nothing vintage bout it. It's a half circle wrap skirt in yet another crazy novelty print. It's from a modern book that teaches you to make basic skirts without patterns. It's very inspiring and economical.

kamikat,

like LadyDay said, late 30's-early 40's styles weren't that different yet. That style still looks 30's to me...if it's 40's, then it's gotta be like, January 1st, 1940 :D

Very cute on you!...I'd love to see it made up in the black and white, like the woman on the pattern envelope. I think the shape suits you.

There are so many cute things that you ladies have made!

I made a bias skirt out of some left over material to go with my 30's 3 hour sweater.

I have a lot to share! :) In preparation for my move I've been trying to hammer out most of my "to sew" list. I'll come back in the morning and add pattern info if anyone is interested.

Just waiting on a button and buckle set from Etsy!

Made with the 30s skirt pattern from Past Patters. I'm glad I heeded DPD's warning about the skirt length - I had to add 4" to each skirt piece so it'd be the right length after hemming (I ran out of fabric though and had to buy some more that wasn't quite the same color, luckily that's in the back)!

And a not-so-great shot of the jumper, but I love it for the lady I'm standing next to! ;)

Missing is a blouse that got a little roughed up in the wash and is not fit for eyes right now. :(

I'm not a handy-dandy sew'er (yet), but tonight I went crazy with the glue gun and made a few accessories from some goodies I picked up while at the Hobby Lobby.
