This is pretty much the ideal suit IMO.

It's a very splendid suit, but I would prefer if he showed some cuff. Minor point though, they both look splendid! This very much reminds me of a shot of my grandparents taken in 1925. Every time I see these kinds of shots of young folks, it reminds me how much class and elegance has been drained out of our society.

I'm always a sucker for plaid-over-stripe. So many lines!

Me too! Perhaps simply by virtue of the composition of my wardrobe, I've very often worn this combo and I love it. I always try to keep in mind the superb advice given by Matt Decker regarding the mixing of similar and dissimilar patterns.

Here's Stewart Granger from the 1948 film 'Woman Hater':

What I always notice about Granger in this period is the way that he wears very well-fitting clothes and that they are usually incredibly modern looking - he always appears to be wearing the suit that everyone else will be wearing in a couple of years. Thus, we see him in two button jackets with deep lapels before they were popular. Also many of his late 1940s suits have narrower lapels than usually seen in the UK at the time. I get the impression he wore his own clothes, having spent a lot of time and effort choosing them.

after having looked at so much 20s imagery over the last two-three years the shoulders on some of these jackets look distractingly wide to me (images 1 and 9 especially).

It's always interesting to see that Granger favoured a spread collar shirt worn with a very tight Windsor knot in his tie. He also seems to favour plain ties.

i'm guessing the photos above are Englishmen abroad. what do you think ?

I immediately thought the photos were from the UK. The angle of the beach in relation to where they are standing would indicate they are on a pier. I know they do have piers in other countries but they are, to the best of my knowledge, most common in the UK. That said there is something quite foreign about the landscape behind them, in particular the large building on the right in the second photo (which makes me think of an elaborate tunnel entrance on a French or Italian coastal road).

yes, that building looks like something from Italy or Spain. i'm sure they're Brits though with those jumpers !

Beautiful clobber! Those white bucks they have? 1920's yeah?

Looks like they are on a lake as the water is too flat to be a sea (?) and the landscape roughly reminds me of Lake Garda or Lake Maggiore in North Italy. What made you think of British men abroad? could they not be US? COuld they be on a boat (ferry of some sort)? What a picture!

not sure. certainly teens- early 20s but i can't be sure of the year.

i've only seen those jumpers in British photos, so i assume they're Brits.
