A bit of (semi-apocryphall) trivia: somewhere I read that Griffith wanted to be a poet, and planned to reserve David Wark Griffith when he was published. D. W. Griffith was his choice for the medium of film.

"The Year is 1943. These are Hats belonging to Regular Customers who have gone off to War. they are hung, with pride, on the Wall of a Pool Hall Bar in Manhattan, NYC, for "Good Luck" & will be re-claimed by those who return. Those Hats that are not re-claimed will be enshrined in a "Case of Honor".

Post made me think of this one from my collection.....bears posting again.

7-12-43 CHECK YOUR HATS FOR THE DURATION
A.O. Wetzel, proprietor of an Oak Park Illinois Drug Store, keeps hats nicely labeled, of all his customers who have entered the services, Army, Navy, Marines and even the WAVES............
On the far left helping Wetzel in the picture is Mrs. John L. Davidson Jr. Whose husband is overseas, and Rosemary Tye (center) who has three brothers in uniform.
