William Clarke Quantrill & Sarah Catherine "Kate" King (exact date unknown)

Kate King's father owned the farm next to the Morgan Walker farm at Blue Springs, MO. Her father raised saddle horses & it is likely he supplied Quantrill's men with horses when they would frequent the Walker farm. Kate met Quantrill when she was 13 yrs old. After returning from the raid on Lawrence, KS in Aug 1863 Quantrill picked up Kate & they were married by a local preacher. She was just 15 yrs old. In the Spring of 1865 Quantrill along with Frank James & a few others, escorted Kate to St. Louis, MO on their way to KY. For her safety she was using the name of Kate Clarke. In June Quantrill was shot & paralyzed while mounting his horse, & lingered in a hospital in Louisville for some 27 days. Kate rushed to his side & was widowed at age 17. She would live on until 1930 when she was 82-83 yrs old.

I actually have a few hats I have creased like that. Gives more room in the crown for my big head. Tends to work well with tapered crowns, and those a bit shorter.....
I don't like the crowns sitting on my head.
I have noticed this crease more than a few times in movies of all periods and especially TV shows from the late 50's through the 60's when crowns were smaller.....

Sheltering in place has allowed my wife and I to watch some old favorite movies. We were watching It’s a Mad Mad Mad Max world and I interrupted the movie to pause on Spencer Tracy’s hat. It’s crushed in the back seat of his car, he pops it to open crown, chops a crease into it (organic would be generous...downright sloppy) and pops it on. It looks great. I wish I Had the confidence, and that great felt!

That's one of my favorite moments from the movie. Mr. Tracy had clearly done that countless times in real life with his own hats, and he makes it look so easy. It's a great little character moment.

I had not seen the movie in several years and that scene caught my attention when I watched it several months ago. I said to myself, "That's a man who has worn a lot of hats!"

That brings back memories. I remember seeing that at the drive in when I was a wee lad.
