Should I Replace the Ribbon?

I just found a nice navy 3-pleat puggaree for $5 at the David Morgan website, but they wanted $7 shipping! I kind of like the idea of a puggaree as I'm not sure how to make a proper bow for a hat ribbon, plus I like the look of it. A google search for puggarees only turned up one seller (David Morgan) and about 5362 definitions of the term. Anyone know a good source?

Hey Art! J.T. needs your help!:D oh and Kilroy too!

Thanks for the thought, but please don't bother Art on my account. He's not inclined to help do-it-yourselfer's, and I can't say that I blame him. This is our hobby; it is his livelihood. I respect that. :)

J.T., I second that, although it was a nice thought. Besides, Indycop has already come to the rescue! Thanks Indycop! :eusa_clap

This summer I bought an inexpensive Panama hat. The store had a number of these Panamas in various sizes, but the only one that fit my pumpkin head had a white ribbon. I'm not thrilled about a white ribbon on a white hat, but the price was very right, so I bought it. I'm looking to change the ribbon to something like a navy blue or black, but I have no idea where to look to buy a ribbon. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thanks! :)

Kilroy . . .

You should go into Philly this weekend, and check out the local hat shops. They will, no doubt, be happy to help you pick a good ribbon, and maybe a couple . . .

UPDATE ON BORSALINO AND RIBBON

Remember this?

J.T.Marcus said:
I've replaced quite a few grosgrain ribbons, using both pirated and brand new materials. I am, however struggling with whether I should replace the ribbon on this ancient Borsalino, or just accept it as it is, and appreciate the character.

What would you do?

I suspect the hat is older than I am. It was the filthiest piece of felt I've ever seen. The dark line at the lower edge of the ribbon was under the wind trolley, which had dry-rotted and quickly broke.

Here's what it looks like, now:

I ended up pirating a brown grosgrain ribbon from another hat. (I do still have the original ribbon, and I'm still working on it. I may put it back on, but it's not there yet.) Notice the dark line that was at the base of the ribbon is nearly gone, now. I finally tried "SPRAY N' WASH" (liquid in the spray bottle). It took out those deposits nothing else could remove. It ain't perfect, and never will be, but it's better.

One sad discovery, the sweatband which seemed sound had actually dry rotted. It fell apart! (I still have the remains.) So, my Borsalino now has a new leather sweatband.

It will always look like an old hat (nearly a beater), but it fits great, feels good, and (IMHO) looks fairly good.

I walked into a nursing home, today, with that hat on my head. Somebody yelled out, "I'll give you a hundred dollars for that hat!" He wasn't really serious, but it sure did make me feel good. :)

Mingo, that is a good idea except I have to work on Saturday, and we're supposed to get a major snowstorm Saturday night into Sunday. I don't think I'm going anywhere...

J.T., good looking hat! :eusa_clap Even though the ribbon is a little darker than the original, I think it looks quite good on the hat.

Yeah yeah yeah, the hat looks great... But I'll give you a hundred dollars for that painting you're standing beside!

(except I expect it's worth much more)

Seriously though, nice job on the lid.

Wow! Two hundred dollars in one day. By the time I add that to the Twelve million I've won in eight different internet lotteries, this month... lol

Thanks fellows, for all the encouragement. I love this hobby. :)

Now that's one heck of an improvement! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap I do hope the original turns out to be salvageable, though. That would be cool.

Actually, he will answer questions and give advice if asked, but that treasure trove of vintage ribbon he has gathered over the years is a very limited commodity so it's not something that can be parted out. As you say, it's for his livelihood.

Cheers,
Tom
